Mayo and Meath contest sellout final
September 19, 2008
The Irish Handball Council have announced that the second weekend of the M DONNELLY All-Ireland 60x30 handball finals is a sell-out.
The All Ireland Doubles Final will see a clash between Mayo's Dessie Keegan and Joe McCann, and Meath pairing, Tom Sheridan and Brian Carroll. This unique clash has generated great interest in the handball and wider GAA fraternity, with great demand for tickets.
Meath veteran, Tom Sheridan last appeared in an All-Ireland Doubles final in 2004 and now he is back for more action. The 40-year-old has amassed an incredible eight All-Ireland Doubles titles since his first in 1992 and is viewed by many as the best doubles player ever to grace the big alley courts of Ireland.
Joining forces with Sheridan was a major step up in Carroll's career but the 21-year-old has settled well into the partnership and despite being in their first year together, the duo has shown they can mix it with the best. In a thrilling semi-final battle, they defeated reigning champions, Dublin's Eoin Kennedy and Egin Jensen in a dramatic tie-breaker 21-19 and many see them as favourites on the back of this victory.
The Mayo pairing have appeared in two finals, but memories of last year will be far from their minds when they take to the Croke Park stage on Saturday. The county's last Senior Doubles victory was in 1966 and the Ballaghaderreen pair, who will both line out in defence for the senior footballers next weekend, will be anxious to end the 42 year famine west of the Shannon.
In the Minor Doubles Final, Limerick young-guns CJ Fitzpatrick and Seamus O'Carroll will be bidding for back to back titles when they take on Kilkenny's Ger McGrath and Patrick Funchion in the curtain raiser. Tipperary's Ger Coonan and Kilkenny's Nicholas Anthony will then contest the Intermediate Singles final, with the Premier County man in search of his own piece of history, having collected the Intermediate Doubles title two weeks ago.
Action gets underway at 3pm in Croke Park.
