Meath men in handball finals
September 15, 2008
Over the coming week, Meath handballers Tom Sheridan and Brian Carroll will put the final touches to their preparation for the M. Donnelly All-Ireland 60x30 Senior Doubles final where they face Mayo duo Dessie Keegan and Joe McCann at Croke Park Handball Centre on Saturday 20th September.
Sheridan has a wealth of experience at this level having already collected eight Senior 60x30 Doubles titles between 92'-04' however this will be a new experience for his new doubles partner Brian Carroll. The pairing played exceptional handball during the semi-final to overcome defending and three-time champions, Dublin's Eoin Kennedy and Egin Jensen in what was a three game thriller, an exhibition in our traditional 60x30 game. Many feel that a repeat performance will allow the Royal County duo to take gold on this coming Saturday.
However their opponents will have much to say to that and will be seeking revenge on two fronts, firstly to overcome last year's disappointment where they reached the final but due to an unfortunate injury Joe McCann had to sit out the final in which his team mate Dessie Keegan with Kevin Geraghty lost to Dublin pairing Kennedy and Jensen. Secondly the pairing will look for retribution on part of their home club Ballaghaderreen for their loss to Kells in the Macsports All-Ireland Open Interclub final earlier in the year. The two players have considerable experience at this level, being runners up in 2005 and have a well known ambition to claim the All-Ireland Senior Doubles title this year.
Leinster U-12 Doubles Final
Saturday 13th September,
Croke Park Handball Centre
Robert Fox/Dylan Sheridan (Meath) dft Cormac Duggan/Michael Fennelly (Kilkenny) 15-10, 14-15, 15-12
It is to some encouragement to the Meath duo that Robert Fox and Dylan Sheridan, both of Kells Handball Club, claimed the Leinster U-12 Doubles titles on Saturday past on the same stage that Sheridan and Carroll will compete on next week. The junior pairing displayed some excellent handball to defeat Kilkenny pairing Cormac Duggan and Michael Fennelly on scores of 15-10, 14-15, 15-12 in what was probably the pick of games at the Leinster underage finals.
