Killeshin crowned junior champions

August 29, 2008
Killeshin ended a 15-year wait without silverware when they defeated The Heath in a low-scoring junior 'A' football championship final at O'Moore last Saturday. A Barry Ryan goal midway through the second half was the decisive score in the green and whites' 1-4 to 0-5 victory. As the scoreline suggests, scoring opportunities were at a premium and, in fact, the losers failed to score in the second half, meaning Killeshin will have intermediate football to look forward to in 2009. Favoured by the wind in the opening half, The Heath went into the break leading by 0-5 to 0-3. But they were completely shutout in the second period as Ryan's major ended Killeshin's long wait for success. There was a huge outpouring of emotion at the final whistle, and the Killeshin players were quick to dedicate the success to the memory of the late Sean Brennan, an All-Ireland minor medal winner with Laois in 2003 who died in tragic circumstances in March 2006.
