JUNIOR B FOOTBALL QUARTER FINAL Raheen Junior Footballers qualified for the semi-final of the Junior B Football Championship for the second year in a row following their defeat of Daingean in the quarter-final last Tuesday evening in Walsh Island on a scoreline of 0-12 to 0-05. Raheen opened the scoring with a point from John Hackett inside the first minute and added their second from Eoghan Bolton three minutes later. In the 8th minute Raheen added their 3rd point from Dermot Guinan. Daingean opened their account with a point in the 13th minute but had to wait another 13 minutes to score their second from a free during which time Raheen missed a number of good scoring opportunities including one or maybe 2 goals. In the last minute of the half the sides added a further point apiece with the Raheen score from Dermot Guinan. This saw Raheen leading at the break by the minimum margin 0-04 to 0-03. Raheen upped their performance in the second half and effectively decided the game as a contest when they scored 4 points without reply within the first 10 minutes of the half from Colin McHugh(2), Niall Leavy & Liam Gorman. In the 16th minute Daingean hit over their first point of the half but Raheen hit back by adding a further 3 points over the following 10 minutes to seal the win from Dermot Guinan, Colin McHugh and Liam Gorman. Shamrocks completely dominated the first half and opened the scoring with a point in the 5th minute but had to wait until the 15th minute for their next score, a goal, when a lobbing shot from outside the area was deflected off the Na Fianna keeper and into the top corner of the net. Shamrocks then added 2 more points over the following 5 minutes. It wasn't until the 24 minute when Na Fianna opened their account with a pointed free from John Crombie but Shamrocks responded with another point a minute before halftime. This saw Na Fianna go in at the break losing by 1-04 to 0-01 and were it not for a number of fine saves and goaline clearances from Na Fianna keeper Gavin Sheils and full back Brian Corcoran Na Fianna would have been considerably further behind. Na Fianna were a totally transformed team in the second half and hit over 4 points in a row inside the first 10 minutes of the half from Paddy Rigney(2), Paddy Arnold and Michael James Pierce. Na Fianna then added a further 3 points without reply from John Crombie(2) and Paddy Arnold over the following 5 minutes which saw them finally take the lead. The game was effectively decided as a contest in the 19th minute with a goal for Na Fianna when corner forward Michael James Pierce worked his way into the square with the ball only to see his shot deflected by the keeper but fortunately straight into the hands of John Crombie for Na Fianna who turned and shot straight in to the net. Over the remaining 10 minutes the sides added a further 2 points apiece with the Na Fianna scores from Paddy Rigney and John Crombie and Na Fianna held out to take the win.
