Armagh's Oisin McConville

After hanging up his inter-county boots with Armagh, Oisin McConville is to begin a three-year degree course in counselling.

The Crossmaglen native has been working on building sites over the last few months, but hopes that after three years in his chosen course he will be qualified as a counsellor in bereavement, addiction and relationships.

"I wasn't too good at them the first time, so maybe I'll be better the second time around.

"It's particularly to give something back after my gambling addiction and it is just to get myself into a steady number and a consistent 'nine to five' job.

"At times it will involve late hours but the studying is going to be the hardest part of it - the practical end of it will hopefully go okay.

"I have done a ten-week introduction to counselling course in Dundalk. It has given me a good start and made me want to do it more.

"I haven't decided yet who I want to work with, but people's addictions is something that I have some experience of and I have heard that they are crying out for gambling counsellors because it has just taken off in the past couple of years."

Next Sunday week, McConville will be hoping to lead the way to Crossmaglen capturing their 14th county title in-a-row as the Armagh kingpins take on Dromintee in the quarter-finals.

"Dromintee is on the mind because it's only a week to go and this is the first chance that the inter-county lads will get a run out," said McConville.
