Carlow came from five points down in the closing 12 minutes to edge out Wicklow by 0-17 to 1-13 in Aughrim to record an opening win in the Tailteann Cup.

Jonah Dunne’s late point proved the difference for the visitors who looked headed for defeat once Eoin Darcy smashed in the game’s only goal on 58 minutes.

The sides couldn’t be separated at the end of first-half, going in level on 0-6 apiece, and a couple of Conor Fee points saw Wicklow getting 0-12 to 0-10 in front before Darcy’s strike.

Darragh Foley’s frees moved the Barrowsiders back within two before Shane Clarke sailed over and Niall Carew’s men would be level thanks to Aaron Amond shooting over in the third minute of injury-time.

It looked like the points would be shared in this opening round derby until Dunne’s intervention snatched the win (and the bragging rights) for Carlow.
