Blessington club notes

June 14, 2021

Good evening everyone. We had a very busy week with fixtures and it was so good to be back. Some of our games were a continuation from last season and we also had a few league fixtures for this season. The pitches are in excellent condition after the recent sanding and rolling and we ask again that you please bear with us while we upgrade our toilet facilities which we hope will be back in service ASAP.

Senior Men played their first league match today Sunday 13th June against Tinahely. It was great to be back to playing competitive games and despite missing a number of regulars due to injury and commitment to the Wicklow Senior and U20 teams the rest of the lads played brilliantly. Blessington held it together for a convincing win of 2-09 to 1-05. The lads have being training so hard over the last few months and it was brilliant to see their hard work pay off. Well done to team and management Team line out P.Manning (GK), L O’Brien, J Gilligan, B.Bohan, K.Hanlon(0-01) P.McLoughlin ,J.Cotter, K.J.Rogers (0-02), J.Magarr, E.Keogh(0-02) D.Silke(1.0) M.Shannon (1.0) J.Nolan, C.Geraghty(0-02), Mick McLoughlin (0-01),Subs:M.O’Toole, E.Cotter, T.Fisher, R.Finan, S.Bohan, D.Siney(0-01)

Junior A played Division 3 league cup match against Avoca on Friday 11th June at home. They had a very comfortable win with a score line of 2-17 to 1-08. Well done to team and management.

U15’s travelled to Bray to last Monday evening for their semi final against An Tochar. Hard luck to the lads who narrowly lost on a final score of 3-09 to 4-08.

Minors:

First match of the year on Friday a friendly V AGB.

With 9 lads not available with county, hurling and injury the Lads really stepped up. Final Scor Blessington 2:08 AGB 2:11.

Well done to the u15s who all played really well. First match ever for Jake Maguire and did well and good to see a couple of lads back after a couple of years break.

Well done to Ethan McNally, Austin Brennan, James Dooley and Sam Gough who played County minor match V Louth on Saturday.

U11 Blue squad played St. Pats in  the Div 1 league final . We started very well but left a lot of scores behind playing against the wind in the first half. Pats led by 5 at halftime .

After a quick chat the lads new they needed a big performance in the second half if they were to get back into the game, And that they delivered , Alfie Mc & Callum Dempsey drove the team from defence With Fiacha Duffy & James Mc Carney adding some important scores from midfield to get us back into the game , Rian Keogh was brilliant throughout and Dylan Callaghan really stood up when his team needed him with some big scores late on ... Very proud coaches and this group of players have come along way and have the Allen cup final to look forward too in the next few weeks .

Fiacha Duffy was team captain and collected the cup which the Team paraded through the Town with the blue & white flags flying high and the car horns heard from miles away ...

We played our long awaited 2020 U11 Div 3 A final vs Kiltegan in Baltinglass on Monday morning. While Kiltegan’s finishing and passing was the difference between us, we were always chasing the game and had to work the hardest, and that we certainly did! In perfect conditions and a very entertaining game of football after months away from the real thing, we are very proud of the lads performance. While we normally would be so clinical in front of goal we found it difficult in the first half to get the scores we needed against the wind. Trailing by only 4 at halftime we continued to pressure Kiltegan and defensively turned over some excellent ball. Zach Geoghan was on form and kicked some fantastic scores with super team effort. Some very fine defending from Barry Smith & Oisin Pender who were excellent and undoubtedly a man of the match performance from Wil O’Connor who was outstanding at full back. The lads will be back working hard in training preparing for this years upcoming games.

With such a big panel we were delighted everyone got to play a part yesterday.

Congrats to kiltegan who on the day were deserved winners.

Well done again lads and thanks to all the parents for your super support as always.

We had 2 U13 teams out on Wednesday 9th June. Both were semi finals from last season and by all accounts they were to excellent games. U13 A championship against St. Nickolas finished Blessington 6-10 to St. Nicks 5-12. Great display and came from behind a few times. Well done everyone and they are now in the champion final. Details as we get them.

U13’s white squad played Michael Dwyers in Div 3 semi final but unfortunately were beaten by 1 goal. A terrific performance by everyone. It finished Blesso 6-08 Michael D’s 7-08.Hard luck lads but a great future of the club that we can field 2 very competitive teams at that age group.

Under 10 Girls. Well done to the girls who played against Leixlip on Saturday 12th June. We had 3 teams out wearing the Blesso Jersey. Great to see them back in action. They were terrific. Delighted to see 12 new players playing their first match. It was a great morning of football all round. Very proud coaches. Thanks to Leixleip for hosting and parents for travelling.

The Acadamy as always is attracting great numbers, It’s great to see all the next generation out there getting involved and enjoying themselves. Thanks as always for the support of our Ladies, this week we had Sadbh Fisher, Orlaith Ni Ghallchobhair and Kayleigh McGuire. And Sean Ellis from our minors.

Our All Stars had another brilliant fun filled  morning. One of our little guy’s tooth fell out and there was a massive hunt to find the missing tooth. But all ended well when the tooth was located! Thanks as always for everyone of our helpers that make this a huge success.

The U15’s Western  Gaels beat Kilcool/St. Pats in the semi-final from last season on Friday 11th June in Ballinakill. They are now into the A Hurling Final Against Michael Dwyer’s. Line out from Blessington is, Brian Richardson (C), Finn Behan, Oisin O’Neill, Thomas Walsh, Max Keogh and Seanen Gardiner. Well done lads and the very best of luck for next week.

The Wicklow Snr Football Team took on Last season’s Ulster championship winners Cavan in  a relegation battle in Navan. Wicklow were in top form and came out on top with a winning score line of 3-11 to 0-18. Congratulations to the team and management but a massive shout out to our Blessington Men Patrick O’Connor 1-02 and Kevin Quinn who was named Wicklow GAA Man Of The Match.

Blessington Senior Men & Adult Ladies Fundraiser

On Saturday 19th June we will take to the hills of Lacken and beyond, hiking to raise funds for the club and charity partner

Féileacáin (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Association of Ireland) (to whom 40% of the proceeds will be donated). We chose the amazing Féileacáin charity in support of our much loved club mate Wayne, Lisa & families on their tremendously difficult heartbreak on the loss of baby Luka.

We would love to see as many club members and the wider community join us in coming together to support this truly worthy cause in memory of Luka.

If you would like to come and join us on the hike (starting & finishing at Cullen’s Ballyknockan), book your slot ASAP as they are filling up fast. The more participants the better(small groups at a time)

Our GoFundMe link is now live  https://gofund.me/10ad23ce

Please donate and share.

Donations can also be made to any player involved through their sponsorship cards.

We look forward to the memorable occasion.
