A major row has broken out in Wexford after local businesses rejected plans to erect a statue in honour of the legendary Nicky Rackard in the centre of the town.
Plans to erect the statue of the county's greatest hurler in the new Trimmers Lane Square have been objected to by a group of business people from the Selskar area who feel it would be 'wholly inappropriate'.
Declan Moloney, who is one of nine business owners opposed to the plan, said: "Selskar is not the place for him."
But Wexford Mayor George Lawlor responded by saying: "I just don't see how it could be a negative thing and I don't like being lectured about the history of Wexford by people who have a limited connection with the town. In fact, it's a bit rich for people with lately come connections to be lecturing the Mayor of Wexford on Selskar."
In a further twist, Rathnure GAA club have also voiced their opposition to plans to place the statue of their local hero in Wexford town and not in their parish.
Wexford legend Ned Wheeler, who played alongside Rackard, said: "I think Nicky Rackard should be honoured outside the Gaelic Park in Rathnure.
"In Cork, Christy Ring is right outside the pitch where he learnt his hurling in Cloyne and I think Nicky Rackard should be in his home spot too, on the foot of Mount Leinster.
"I think Nicky Rackard would be lost in Selskar."
