Shelmalier Club notes
July 15, 2009
Shelmaliers are looking for volunteers for our annual fund raiser- bag packing in Dunnes Stores. We have been allocated the weekend of 23rd, 24th and 25th July and need as many parents, players over 17 and supporters as possible. Please give your name to your child's manager or any committee member.
Our minor hurlers travelled to Rathangan Wednesday last and had to dig deep in the second half to secure a well deserved win. We started slowly enough and despite points from Feargal Hynes and Benny Barron together with a goal from Johnny Campbell we went into the break two points down 1-3 to 0-8. However on the resumption and with some enforced changes Shels came out with all guns blazing and started to play the style of hurling they are renowned for. Feargal Hynes got the ball rolling with a neat dispatch over the bar and subsequent points from Benny Barron (3) Brian Doyle (2), Shane Griffith, and Feargal Hynes together with two crackers of goals from Craig McCabe and Johnny Campbell left the final score 3-14 to 1-12.
Strongest on the night were our three county minors fresh from Croke Park, Benny Barron, Brian Doyle and James Gordon together with the staunch Aidan Cash.
Our Juvenile footballers had to hold on for dear life to come away with a victory in Hollymount last Tuesday to beat Ballinastraw Gaels by a point.
The half time score was 3-3 to 1-3, thanks to goals from Conor Tobin and Glen Murphy. After 15 minutes of second half we led by 11 points but they fought back well to level but our boys showed great heart to come back again and hold out for a narrow victory. Final score: 5-5 to 4-7. Best for Shels were Craig McCabe, Conor Tobin, Neil Rossiter and Niall Tobin.
Our third Footballers met Kilmore in the league final last Tuesday night. The Shels side put up a strong fight but Kilmore 2nd team proved too strong. Final score 5-8 to 3-7. Best for Shels were John Nolan, Paddy Murphy, Vinny Parker, Mark Tobin, Stephen Cash, and Paddy Kelly.
Our Junior Hurlers went down by the smallest of margins in Monamolin last Thursday night to Buffers Alley 2nd team, in the league semi final.
The two teams were level at half time and a close finish was anticipated at this stage. Shels went behind in the second half and despite a strong finish couldn't get the elusive equaliser and bowed out of this league semi final. Final score 2-15 to 2-14. Strongest on the night were Fergie Parker, David Cloney, Colin Kehoe, Des Kehoe and Ronan Kavanagh.
There was no winner of our lotto this week and the jackpot will be 19,600 next week. No's drawn: 2,7,10,18. Bonus 39.
7 match 3 winners. Pat Colfer, Anne Donohoe, Penny Kirwan, Jane Howlin, Aidan O'Leary, Anne-Marie & Chloe, Alan McAuley. Each receive 42
Well done to Brain Malone, Oldtown & Stephen Banville, Orchard Lane who were on county duty over the weekend. Brian with the senior footballers drew and the team will travel to Roscommon next weekend for the replay. Stephen, despite illness took to the field for the last quarter, but the senior hurlers lost to a strong Limerick team on the day.
