Goals from Conor Hearne and Seamus Casey were key as Wexford edged Waterford by 2-23 to 1-23 to secure their first win of this year’s Allianz Hurling League campaign.

Having drawn their three previous Division 1 Group A encounters leading up to this Walsh Park clash, Keith Rossiter’s side got over the line in this one after having trailed by five points early on and three (0-16 to 1-10) at the halfway stage.

The points of Casey (free) and Kevin Foley got the visitors level by the 47th minute and, after three more points flew over the Waterford bar, Casey’s goal would make it a six-point game.

The margin went out to seven before substitute Padraig Fitzgerald smashed in a sorely needed goal for the Deise men with 10 minutes to go and he’d add a point four minutes later to keep things on a knife edge.

Points from Dessie Hutchinson, Fitzgerald and Jamie Barron kept the heat on Wexford to the finish, but they’d see it out with Corey Byrne-Dunbar’s free deep in injury-time cementing the three-point win.
