Joe Fortune has been appointed as the new manager of the Westmeath senior hurling team on a two-year term.

A native of Enniscorthy, the former Dublin minor and U21 hurling boss succeeds Shane O'Brien who resigned from the post last month after delivering the Lake County's first Joe McDonagh Cup success.

Fortune has been a key figure in the development of Dublin hurling over the past two decades, having led the Sky Blues to Leinster titles at both minor and U21 level in 2007 and 2016, respectively.

He also guided Ballyboden St Enda's to the 2018 Dublin SHC title before stepping aside in the wake of last year's final defeat to Cuala.

More recently, he was coach with the Wexford U20 hurlers.

Tonight's Westmeath county board meeting also ratified senior football boss Jack Cooney for another two years.
