Shelmaliers club notes

August 11, 2009
Shelmaliers Junior hurlers met Adamstown's first team on Saturday evening in New Ross. As both teams had lost their first round games it was imperative that Shels won this game. Shels went into the break a point down despite a Ronan Kavanagh goal in the 28th min. Shels started the stronger in the second half and Ibar Murphy pointed from a free before Conor Byrne goaled from the penalty spot. Shels introduced some new legs at this stage and were staying well in touch with Adamstown. Points from Ibar Murphy (4) Shane Griffith, and Brian Doyle meant both teams were neck and neck to the finish. Shels emerged the victors by the smallest of margins 2-12 to 0-17. Amongst those to shine on a night when all the team played well were Brian Murphy, Conor Byrne, Ibar Murphy, Shane Griffith, and Ronan Kavanagh. Our juvenile footballers bowed out of the championship last week with a defeat away to Fethard. Played in awful conditions, the home team won on a score line of 1-7 to 0-6pts. Best on the day were Sean Byrne, Simon Murphy, Adam Whitmore Stephen Dwyer and Eoghan Fitzgerald. This team were very unlucky not to qualify for the Semi-Final as they finished on the same points as two of the other semi finalist but lost out on the results of a previous game. Shel's 2nd team footballers met Our Lady's Island in Hollymount on Monday afternoon. Shels lined out a young team in preparation for the upcoming U-21 Football Championship. Shels went into an early lead with points by Conor Walsh, Fergal Hynes Shane Griffith and a great goal by Brian Tobin. The Island replied with 1-2 but the half time score was 1-6 to 1-2. In the second half, Shels continued their dominance, Kevin O'Leary, Conor Walsh & Feargal Hynes further increased the Shels lead. Final score 2-11 to 2-4 to Shels. Shels Senior footballers lost to Duffry Rovers in the second round of the championship. Having accounted for Duffry Rovers by 10 points in the previous year, Shels were expected to account for them again. Shels started very well but Duffry when they got on the scoreboard piled on the pressure and put Shels on the back foot. When Shels were reduced to 14 men, Duffry took advantage and held strong to win by two points on a scoreline 1-10 to 0-11. Shels senior hurlers went down to Blackwater on Sunday evening in Wexford Park by 2 points. Final score 1-11 to 1-13. Shelmaliers, forced to make several last minute changes to the team due to injuries, were neck and neck with Blackwater until they goaled just before half time. Shels went into the break 4 points down. 0-6 to 1-7. On the resumption we started the stronger and with points from Benny Barron, Brian Doyle, Tommy Barron and Joe Kelly (f) we went into the lead for the first time when a speculative free from Joe Kelly ended up in the back of the net. Unfortunately from there Blackwater piled on the pressure and ran out winners by 2 points. Final score 1-13 to 1-11.Best on the day were Decky Murphy who was excellent in goal, Benny Barron, James Gordon, and Andre O'Brien whilst Ciaran O'Shaughnessy was solid when introduced. Corner back John Kelly had a very strong second half. Shelmaliers need to beat Glynn/Barntown by five points in two weeks time to progress any further in the county championships. Team: Declan Murphy, John Kelly, Aidan Murphy (C) Andre O'Brien, David Walsh, Brian Malone, Conor Byrne, Colm Kehoe, David Cloney (0-1), Benny Barron (0-1), Tommy Barron (0-2), Conor Walsh, James Gordon, Stephen Banville (0-1), and Joe Kelly (1-5, 1-4F) Subs introduced: Brian Doyle (0-1), Ciaran O'Shaughnessy, and Seamie Harding. Shels 3rd Football team put up a brave fight against St. Joseph's first team last Saturday in Patrick's park, but it wasn't enough on the day. Final score 0-6 to 2-9. Keith Rossiter, Ciaran Murphy, Donal Power and Conor O'Shaughnessy were to the fore. The Shels U10 boys travelled to Naomh Marnog in Dublin on Sat last for a hurling match. The boys played a great game of hurling which was closely contested all the way. Sean Kane gave a great display in defence while Kyle Roche and Christopher Cowman put over some lovely points from play. The boys won 2-5 to 1-5. Thanks to all who travelled with the boys.
