Former Limerick hurling boss Tom Ryan has been appointed as Westmeath manager in succession to Michael Conneely.
Ryan, who guided the Shannonsiders to All-Ireland final appearances in 1994 and '96, was ratified as manager at a meeting of the Westmeath hurling board on Wednesday night, November 12.
Despite the county's lack of success on the hurling front, Westmeath have had a number of high-profile managers in recent years, including Johnny Clifford, Joachim Kelly and Georgie Leahy. Galway legend Joe Cooney was reportedly offered the position, but was unable to take it because of a coaching role he has with the Connacht Council.
