Charity Game in Archerstown
Last Sunday afternoon saw a selection of the 1993 Championship Final Team travel to Fr Reilly Memorial Park, to take on the victors on that occasion, Brownstown, in a charity match in aid of Cancer Research. Twelve of that year's panel were available with three 'ringers' making sure that we fielded a full fifteen. In a shortened game of twenty minutes a half, it was Castletown who started the better with two early points, following great work by the Castletown full forward line of Noel Geraghty, Joe Clarke and Eamonn Clarke. Brownstown responded with a point of their own after eleven minutes before Patrick Clarke fired home a goal for Castletown to leave it 1-2 to 0-1. Both sides traded points before half time and it was 1-3 to 0-2 at the break. Whether by accident or design, a head injury befell Joe Clarke just before the half time whistle, and there were some running repairs done by the Brownstown medical staff and our own 'nurse on call', Paddy Corcoran. (Photographs on facebook for anyone wanting to see real bravery!). The second half saw our centrefield and half forward lines get more of a foothold in the game, with sterling work from Jackson, Maloney and Corcoran, but Brownstown were equally determined and had our own backs under a lot of pressure with Fintan Clarke, Peter Dalton and Ger Jackson seeing a lot of action in the half back-line. A goal and a point from the '93 Champions had them back on level terms at 1-3 a-piece, but Castletown responded with points from Derek Gallagher and Ger Jackson to go two points in front. There were further chances for Castletown to pull away but Brownstown showed great steel to pull two points back and level matters, despite some stout defending from Pauric Dalton and Willie Corcoran in the Castletown full back line. John Jacksons' goal was threatened a couple of times in the final minutes but he held his nerve to keep that second goal out and clear his lines. A draw can be a fair result, on this occasion it was and the final score read 1-5 a-piece. Thanks to our Management team on the day of Noel Jackson and Noel Geraghty, and to Brownstown Hurling Club for their hospitality before and after the game. Team: John Jackson, Willie Corcoran, Pauric Dalton, Shane Heraty, Fintan Clarke, Peter Dalton, Ger Jackson 0-1, Derek Gallagher 0-2, Kevin Jackson, Jimmy Maloney, Paddy Corcoran, Patrick Clarke 1-2 (1f), Noel Geraghty, Joe Clarke, Eamonn Clarke.
