Eoin Cornally presents Debbie Newman with The Detty Cornally Volunteer Award.

Debbie Newman First Winner of The Detty Cornally Volunteer Award

Congratulations to Debbie Newman who was a most worthy and popular first winner of The Detty Cornally Volunteer Award at the Mullingar Shamrocks LGFA Underage County medal presentation event held in The Clubhouse.

Lisa Burke paid tribute to Detty Cornally’s massive contribution to the promotion of LGF in the club. There could have hardly been a more appropriate way of honouring our late great President - a lady who personified the concept of volunteerism and the value of contributing to her community at several levels.

It was appropriate that Detty's granddaughter Róisín was one of the girls collecting Under-14 League and Championship medals.

Club chairperson, David Nohilly spoke of Debby’s contribution to the club over the years and Eoin Cornally made the trophy presentation on behalf of the Cornally family. Several members and generations of the Cornally family were present to mark the occasion as were several of Detty’s friends who supported the extraordinary woman in her LGF and Scór endeavours over the years on behalf of Mullingar Shamrocks.

Debbie Newman has been contributing to Mullingar Shamrocks since Mairéad discovered LGF and Springfield a decade or so ago. Debbie has contributed in ways too numerous to mention. She stepped on to the stage in 2019 in our great Fundraising event The Sound of the Musicals as part of the cast of Les Miserable. A year later Debbie was part of Robbie Boyle’s management team when Mullingar Shamrocks won the WestmeathLadies Gaa Intermediate title in the difficult season of Covid. Since then Debbie has been ever-present on the senior management teams as FLM or otherwise. In 2022 and 2023, Debbie was centrally involved in organising and managing the booking of camping and camper van arrangements for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann and welcoming presence in Springfield for our guests from practically every county in Ireland. Since 2023, Debbie has been Vice-Chairperson of Mullingar Shamrocks having previously served for many years as secretary of the Mullingar Shamrocks LGF committee.

Saturday 21 February gives us a flavour of Debbie’s commitment to the cause. The day began in Springfield at 7.30 am with a training session for our Senior LGF panel followed by a two hour stint in the Park Hotel on the Mullingar Shamrocks Stand at the Mullingar Chamber Midlands Career Expo 2026. Debbie rearranged her schedule to be present at the Medal presentation oblivious to the fact that she was to be the first recipient of The Detty Cornally Volunteer Award.

That’s our Debbie – a wonderful volunteer for Mullingar Shamrocks who works quietly for the club and has never once chased the limelight. Long may it continue.

ACL Div.5: The Downs 0-14 Mullingar Shamrocks 3-12

A good opening night as Mullingar Shamrocks ACL Div. 5 side began the club season with a good victory against The Downs. With 19 players unavailable, the always positive team manager Gary Corroon still managed to conjure up another 19 players on what was a near perfect night for football given the miserable weather we have experienced since Christmas.

The football wasn’t bad either as both the ACL Div. 2 and Senior management teams were on hand to monitor potential candidates for the big challenges ahead. Ross Corroon on outfield duties opened the scoring for Shamrocks with a pointed free; The Downs responded with a pair of points from Shane Carroll and Tadhg Nolan. A Ross Corroon goal restored the lead for Shamrocks that Trevor Keena extended with a fine point that was balanced by a similar score from Tadhg Nolan. Liam English who impressed throughout with his handling produced a great save to deny Tadhg Nolan, the ensuing scramble ended with a pointed free from Nolan (1-2 to 0-4). Andrew Shaw, playing well at centre-forward, pointed before The Downs added 0-3 to their total including a two-pointer courtesy of a Shane Carroll free. The next few minutes were crucial to the final result. Trevor Keena pointed and from the restart Shamrocks gained possession and Jack Kelly pushed forward to create a goal scoring opportunity that was finished in style by Killian Mooney. Matthew Shaw finished another combined attack for Shamrocks third goal and the two-point deficit was converted to a six-point lead (3-4 to 0-7) in the space of a few minutes. Andrew Shaw pointed, an outside of the boot Tom O’Sullivan/Denis Corroon model, before Adam Connell pointed followed by a spectacular Karl McCormack two pointer from midfield. A Ross Corroon pointed free brought the half-time score to 3-6 to 0-10 in favour of Mullingar Shamrocks with five forwards registering scores – always welcome.

Shamrocks extended the lead early in the second half; Pearse Corroon knocked down a restart, Trevor Keena collected and launched a massive two pointer from midfield. Tadgh Nolan pointed from a free that resulted in a black card for Conor Kelly but Shamrocks coped well with the numerical disadvantage. Kilian Mooney kicked a beauty of a point and finished a move that began at the back with a great Bressie turnover (3-9 to 0-11). Shane Carroll and Ben Harte pointed before Ross Corroon kicked his first two pointer of the season (a great effort from play). Andrew Shaw completed the total and the final whistle from Mick Gordon brought a fine game to an end but not before Liam English produced his second great stop of the night.

So a positive start to the season a decent victory, Killian Mooney and Jack Toal had their first taste of adult football and a number of lads made a return to active service most notably the Kelly brothers.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Liam English; Eamonn Breslin, Conor Kelly, Ben Egan (Adam Boyle); Conn O’Hanlon (Caoilinn Walsh), Jack Kelly, Ryan Blundell; Pearse Corroon (Conn O’Hanlon), Ciaran Kiernan; Jack Toal, Andrew Shaw (0-3), Killian Mooney (1-1); Matthew Shaw [1-0] (Darragh Hughes), Ross Corroon [1-4] (Seán Hynes), Trevor Keena (0-4).

ACL Div. 5: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-13 Milltownpass 1-13

Another good performance by our ACL Div. 5 team who were unfortunate to lose to a late Milltownpass goal. Dylan Franzoni made a comeback after an18 month absence from the due to injury. Based on tonight's performance Dylan has lost none of his great ability. Gary Corroon again dipped into his book of contacts to magic a panel of 22 players to Milltownpass despite missing Pearse Corroon, Andrew Shaw, Jack Toal, Killian Mooney and Trevor Keena.

All in all, a very positive performance and the lads really worked hard all game

All panellists got game time and the loss of Ross Corroon and Conn at half-time didn't help the cause.
