Last Saturday’s Leinster Club IFC quarter-final between Allenwood and St Malachy’s in Hawkfield pitted two long-retired county stars against one another.
It was just like the mid-noughties all over again as Kildare legend Johnny Doyle and Westmeath 2004 Leinster SFC final replay scoring hero Alan ‘Budda’ Mangan lined out for at midfield and in goals for their respective clubs. With a combined age of 89, Doyle kicked four points and Mangan pulled off a terrific second half save as the Kildare intermediate champions eventually prevailed after extra-time.
The evergreen pair go back a long way and even played together for Leinster in the now defunct Railway Cup.
TweetWasn’t to be on the day for us but a pleasure to share the field once again with this legend. Might get one more before we retire @johnnydoyle78 ? Best of luck to @allenwood_gfc going forward. @MidlandsSport @KildareGAA @westmeath_gaa pic.twitter.com/Cxoceo5Z5s
