Mullingar Shamrocks GAA Notes

The Village Barn Senior LGF Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 4-7 Killucan 0-7

Like last week's result, the final score paints a misleading picture of the actual match. Shamrocks defiantly defended a three point lead as the game drifted towards injury time before a three goal onslaught secured the championship points.

The victory preserved Shamrocks interest in the championship but that's a story for another day.

Mullingar Shamrocks held a halftime lead of 1-3 to 0-4 thanks to points from Anna Jones (0-2) and Karen Hegarty. Anna also netted the only goal of the half.

Chloe Smullen and Karen exchanged points with Mary Dunne and Hanna Core over the first ten minutes of the second half (1-5 to 0-6). Scores were hard earned. Anna Jones kicked two great frees - both off the ground in the classic mould. The defence and defending was excellent at this stage with the fullback line of Melek Fagan, Annmarie O' Reilly and Siobhán O'Donnell holding firm and Caoimhe Gaffney winning ball everywhere. A Hannah Core free zipped just over the bar and reduced the gap to a single score.

From the restart Chloe Smullen and Karen Hegarty combined with Chloe finishing to the net; Susanna Buckley added a third goal and an Anna Jones-Karen Hegarty combination ended with Karen touching the ball to the Killucan net to give Shamrocks an unlikely 4-7 to 0-7 victory.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Lauren McCormack; Melek Fagan, Siobhan O'Donnell, AnnmarieO'Reilly; Chloe Swarbrigg, Tara Fagan (Jenna Kelly), Caoimhe Gaffney; Máiread Newman, Anna Jones (1-4); Michaela O' Connor, Karen Hegarty (1-2), Alison Bane; Chloe Smullen (1-0) Rachel Cheevers (Holly McCormack), Susanna Buckley (1-0).

Clarkes Bar Junior II Football Championship Semi-final: Coralstown- Kinnnegad 2-15 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-5.

Our Junior II team's championship run ended at the semi-final final stage on Saturday evening on Shandonagh GAA Club brand new pitch. A powerful Coralstown-Kunnegad team dominated from start to finish and were leading by 1-4 to 0-0 before Adam Boyle had Shamrocks first score. An interval lead of 2-7 to 0-2 virtually guaranteed a Kinnegad a final place.

It was an important championship campaign for Shamrocks as it provided an introduction to adult football foe many players and for others an opportunity to play. As a result we had the novel spectacle of seeing Joe Fallon refereeing and Shane Colleary one of his colleagues from the great Leinster title winning Westmeathgaaofficial team playing for Shamrocks. The great Kieran Gavin also lined out and a glorious pass from Kieran in the first half that split the Kinnegad defence was worth the admission price alone.

We'll done to the management team of Gary, Ritchie, Seamus and Robbie for performing a loaves and fishes type miracle in rounding up players throughout the season.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Mikey Curley; William O' Reilly, Conor Firzpatrick, Daniel Chukwuemeka; John Ryan, Jordan Awunah, James Shaw; Andrew Connaughton, Jack Kelly; Ken O' Reillly, Gary Corroon, Adam Boyle; Kieran Gavin, Paddy Joyce, Matthew Maslin. Also: Shane Colleary, Aaron Russell, Brian Reidy, Daragh Ryan, Rian Adamson, Mark Shaw.

Last Go Games Blitz of the Season .

A busy morning for players, coaches and parents as the Under-7s, Under-9s and Under-11s completed their Go Games schedule for the season. Shamrocks Greens Under-7s Under-9s and Under-11s travelled to Clonmellon to their hosts St. Paul's where they joined Kilbeggan Shamrocks and Multyfarnham for a morning's football. Our Under-7 Whites were Springfield where they hosted Tyrrellspass and Millmore Gaels.

Well done to all the boys this morning, some great football skills were on display, some tough fought battles on the field where the boys held their own, all players showing good teamwork and passing and a willingness to help out their teammates, great to watch the boys progress and improve for the last Go games of the season. Well done boys and a big huge Thanks to all the parents for their continued support in taking the boys to these games.
