The close-knit community of North Westmeath is in mourning following the passing of a local GAA player.
Hundreds of tributes have been paid on social media to Castlepollard man Robbie Cooney who died on Wednesday. Robbie was a very popular young man who played football for his beloved Ballycomoyle and also coached their U15 team. He also played hurling with Ringtown.
"Our club and community have been plunged into deep sadness at the untimely death of our player, incredible clubman and dear friend Robert Cooney," Ballycomoyle GAA said in a Facebook post.
"Our deepest condolences to the Cooney family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time. Rest In Peace Robbie.
"All club activities have been postponed until further notice."
Ringtown GAA posted: "Everyone from our club and community are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our friend, club member and team mate Robbie Cooney.
"Robbie has been a valued member since joining Ringtown Hurling Club and will be missed dearly by the Ringtown community and beyond.
"We offer our sincere sympathy and prayers to the Cooney family during this difficult time.
"Rest in peace Robbie."
