A vote will take place at next month's Special Congress on the future of the All-Ireland SHC preliminary quarter-finals.

A Central Council motion is proposing to abolish the preliminary quarter-finals, and thus remove the link between the Joe McDonagh and Liam MacCarthy Cups. While Carlow and Westmeath are keen to retain the link between the two competitions, Laois and Offaly are among the counties set to support the proposal which sees the Joe McDonagh Cup winners and runners-up play the third-placed teams in Munster and Leinster.

But Tipperary's hammering of this year's Joe McDonagh Cup runners-up Offaly is likely to see the motion succeed. Apart from Laois beating Dublin in 2019, all the preliminary quarter-final results have gone in favour of the Liam MacCarthy sides and by large winning margins in many cases.
