Mullingar Shamrocks GAA Notes

August 28, 2023

Shay Murtagh Precast Westmeath Senior Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-13 Moate All Whites 0-10

In the end, it was not to be.

Our lads delivered the essential victory but it was Athlone, within seconds of elimination a few weeks ago in Kinnegad, who also did what they had to do  against Garrycastle and were rewarded with a place in the knock-out stages of the championship. We wish them and our first round conquerors Tang the best of luck next weekend in their respective games.

We can draw many positives from this campaign and we thank Enda and his management team and the players for their efforts over the past 10 months or so.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Eoin Doran; Dillon Matthews, Efe Siode, Marc Eivers (0-1); Killian Daly, David Gavin (0-1), Conn O’Hanlon; Lorcan Smyth (Conor O’Brien), Paddy Fagan (0-4); Alan Cashman [Ollie MacNamara], Dean Moore (0-2), Shane Ormsby; Jordan Warde (0-1), Denis Corroon (0-4) Brendan O’Reilly (John O’Reilly).

Clarke’s Bar Junior I Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-11 Athlone 0-6

This victory over the already qualified Athlone secured Mullingar Shamrocks the runner-up position in the group and a quarter-final place in the knock-out stages of the Junior championship.

Shamrocks led from the opening bell when Pearse Corroon kicked a point from close to the Clubhouse sideline after receiving a super cross-field pass from brother Ross. Pearse turned provider for the next score, a point by Trevor Keena after Bressie had delivered a great turnover deep in defence. Ross Corroon added a third point from a free before James Beaumont replied with a like score for Athlone. When a long spell of Athlone possession play was ended by Mullingar Shamrocks outstanding player on the night, James Larkin, Luke McCabe swung over another point with the left boot and then repeated the act with a similar score from a free. Beaumont and Ross Corroon exchanged points from frees before Neill Hannigan closed the first-half scoring with a fine long-range point (0-7 to 0-2).

The teams shared eight points in the second half. J. Martin began the scoring with a point for Athlone before Niall Hannigan and Trevor Keena combined to split the Athlone defence and send Nathan Cornally through on goal. Nathan’s shot was saved by the Athlone keeper who brilliantly deflected the ball over for a point. L. Whelan and J. Martin added points for Athlone before Ross Corroon kicked three great points to seal the deal for Shamrocks the first of these was probably the highest point of the season. In between J. Kenny pointed for Athlone for whom Fergal Murray, one of the heroes of the Westmeath All-Ireland Minor title winning team of 1995 lined out in his favourite corner-back position. It’s great to see.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Philly Shaw; Eamonn Breslin, Aaron Purcell, Dylan Carey; Pearse Corroon (0-1), Eddie Moore, Niall Hardiman (Nathan Smyth); James Larkin, Ciaran Kiernan; Niall Hannigan (0-1), Trevor Keena (0-1), Nathan Cornally (0-1); Luke McCabe (0-2), David Culkin (Brian Melody), Ross Corroon (0-5).

Mullingar Shamrocks’ Summer Camp.

Another hugely successful club initiative took place this week with the second of our three annual club camps for boys and girls aged between 6-11. Over 90 players attended and the weather gods were mainly in benevolent mood. Eanna Holland, the club’s GPO, was the main man tasked with running the camp and he received great assistance from underage Secretary, Pat Collins who ensured a welcome supply of healthyish treats for everyone.

We had 18 teenage coaches to run the various drills and activities and yet again these teenagers surpassed themselves with their patience, enthusiasm and people skills. Take a bow Adam Glynn, Lisa Glynn, Criostoir Ormsby, Shane Ormsby, Paul Keating, Laura Matthews, Conor Fagan, Aideen Langtry, Dylan Carey, Ella Briody, Roisin Nohilly, Zara Corroon, Grace Hanly, Ruairi Kelly, Peter Finch, MJ Burke and John Shaw. Andrina Finch was also on hand to work on the younger players’ artistic skills and there were shamrocks and rainbows aplenty adorning the clubhouse.

The ice cream van made a welcome appearance on Wednesday morning, (if it’s good enough for Limerick’s all conquering hurlers then it’s good enough for Shamrocks!!) and the coaches enjoyed this treat as much as the 6 year olds.

The three days were extremely well organised and the participants enjoyed themselves no end. The effusive parental feedback on Wednesday afternoon was gladly received. The planning for the Halloween camp will begin shortly.

Under-9 Super Games in Cusack Park

Mullingar Shamrocks, Kilbeggan Shamrocks GAA Club and Ballynacargy Gaa were involved in the Under-9 Super Games this (Tuesday) evening. The Super Games concept brings players from different clubs to play games. We had a great turnout with Mullingar Shamrocks making up over 2/3rds of the players on the field. All the boys gave a great account of themselves and put in some very committed performances.

There were some excellent passages of teamwork on display working the ball up the field with players from other teams too, which was very encouraging to see and shows the versatility within our group. All the boys should be very proud of how they conducted themselves and represented their club today.  Thanks again to all the parents and families and coaches for supporting.

Under 13 League: St Loman’s secure the points.

Our under 13's failed to take the points against our neighbours in the latest round of the Under 13 Phase 2 League. A strong St Lomans side dominated the first half and put some really good scores on the board. Mistakes and missed opportunities left Shamrocks chasing the game. Without some strong defending from Sean Dooley and Conor Glynn, Lomans would have been out of sight at half time but Shamrocks dug in and managed to stay somewhat in touch.

The worse possible start to the second half saw Lomans score a well worked goal and when the easiest thing to do was drop their heads they dusted themselves down and scored the next 6 points in a row and started to play the football they are capable of. While somewhat on top at this point Lomans broke down the field and and scored a second goal which pulled their lead back out. As the conditions continued to deteriorate both sides battled through to the end. Lomans finished deserved winners on the night.

Shamrocks face Garrycastle in their last group game, a game where a win is vital.
