Mullingar Shamrocks GAA Notes

August 16, 2023

It did not happen by accident …

Another important chapter in our club’s history was closed when our guests for the Fleadh Cheoil departed on Monday.

Some enjoyed the Mullingar Fleadh 2023 that they opted to remain on until Tuesday. Keep the customer satisfied was the principle by which the Mullingar Shamrocks executive operated for the week. The compliments we received for the excellence of the Campervan/Camping facilities and the personal attention to our patrons did not happen by accident. This was the result of the attention to detail, voluntary commitment and wonderful administration delivered by David Nohilly, Garrett Doyle and Debbie Newman. They were ably supported in the planning by Oisín Masterson and Ritchie Daly.

We had visitors from practically every county in Ireland (anyone from Waterford?) and the Leeds Ceoltas Branch made Springfield their base for the second year. Ulster counties were strongly represented. Brid Smith T. D. (People before Profit) dropped in for a few days. Oisín Lynch (800 metres) and Seán Cronin (1500 metres) who represented Ireland at the recent European Youth Olympic Festival were there.

The site would not have run so smoothly without the many who volunteered so readily to perform the several tasks that made Springfield a special place for those attending the Mullingar Fleadh 2023. The welcome and smooth administration of the admission process provided an immediate positive impression of Mullingar Shamrocks. Cleanliness was all-important and those who volunteered for the rota ensured that there were no hygiene related complaints.

Our volunteers included Aidan O’ Donoghue, Micheal Burke, Holly McCormack, Lauren McCormack, Karen Hegarty, Clara Thornton, Lisa Burke, Philip Glover, Johnnie Carey, Aileen Daly, Owen Moran, Alessia Hassett, Sinead Sweeney, Tara Fagan

Chloe Swarbrigg, Anna Jones, Melek Fagan, Johnny Hassett, Barry Kelly,Tom Keane, Natasha Miscall, Caoimhe Gaffney, Shona McNicholas, Sophie Hegarty, Marie Leavy, Ann Marie Davitt, Pat Collins, Kate Keaveney, Micaela O’ Connor, Roisin O’ Toole, Siobhan O’ Donnell, Dee Smith, Michelle Gavigan, Peter Thornton, Caroline Thornton, Kevin McCormack, Niall Hardiman, Murty Hanly, Paul Ginnell, Orla Murphy, Margaret Donohoe, Aisha Keegan, Jacquie Corroon, Olga & Dmitry Zabolotnev, Ciara Keegan, Emma McCabe, Adrian Keaveney, Joan Ormsby, Anthony Clinton, Linda Raeside, Lavinia Matthews, Niall Colleary, Maria Carroll and Adrian Buckley. Even our PRO was briefly seen with a mop in his hand on Monday morning. And there are at least two witnesses!

The evening music sessions were wonderful and our Bar Manager, Davy Coyne delivered the goods with his usual quiet efficiency. His support staff of Efe Siode, Aaron Russell, Adam Glynn, Calum Rigney Clyne, Emmet Walsh, Joe Farrelly and Katie Matthews ensured that thirsts were quenched as rapidly as possible.

And downstairs in the Siopa, Jade Farrelly was the busiest barista in Mullingar.

Well done to all concerned and apologies if anyone has been missed from the list. It wasn’t deliberate. And of course we did miss somebody or more importantly a club. Without the generosity of Mullingar Handball Club in making available their facilities the service we had to offer would not be as good. So to Natasha and her committee thanks very much.

Mullingar Shamrocks: A Pilot Club for Ahead of the Game initiative

The Ahead of the Game mental health initiative is a partnership between Movember and the GAA. Mullingar Shamrocks has been chosen as the pilot club for the venture thanks to the enthusiasm that our Healthy Club Officer, Joan Ormsby brings to her role. On Monday night we hosted the UK Trainers who travelled to Ireland to train members of the Gaelic Players Association who will deliver the Ahead of the Game Mental Health Workshops over next 5 years to clubs nationwide. The primary focus of the programme will be on those aged between 12 and 18 Years of age.

On Monday thanks to Joan, our coaches and parents and guardians 23 boys and 23 girls attended two separate workshop delivered by the UK trainers. Members of the GPA, who plan to deliver the programme, attended to observe the delivery. With typical attention to detail Joan Ormsby organised horticulturalist Isolde Dingerkus to deliver a biodiversity walk and talk around our walking track for the GPA trainers who were divided into two groups observing the programme delivery.

Canadian Ice Hockey, UK Rugby, and Australian NFL has already adopted this initiative, and the GAA are the latest governing body to adopt the programme. Mullingar Shamrocks are honoured to act as a pilot club to support the initiative. We are a family friendly, health promoting and inclusive club and are delighted to support an initiative that will potentially be a major benefit to the mental health of all young GAA members.

Congrats Cadhlá

Congratulations to Cadhlá Gilhooley who won a bronze medal at the IMMAF Youth MMA World Championships held in early August in Abu Dhabi. Cadhlá is a member of Relentless Martial Arts Club in Mullingar and her very proud grandfather is our own very active Underage Committee secretary, Pat Collins. Congratulations all.

Our Minor footballers returned to the winner’s enclosure on Monday evening with a comprehensive 5-13 to 1-5 victory over Caulry.

Rule 6.21 (5), (c) and what it means …

There is no point in setting out probabilities and possibilities from our final game in the senior championship against Moate All-Whites. A win is essential (but we could scrape through on a draw in certain circumstances) for both clubs and then we await with interest the results of Tang v Shandonagh and Athlone v Garrycastle. The final destination for all four clubs tied on 4 points is out of their hands; all four depend to some extent on results elsewhere.

According to the Football Planning Report, 'Rule 6.21 shall apply for placings in the various groups of the championships' in the event of ties.

This is what Rule 6.21 (which was amended at the Annual Congress last February) has to say about what happens when teams finish on equal points in the league stage of a championship.

In such a situation, the rule states that ties SHALL be decided by the following means and in the order specified:

(i) The higher number of LEAGUE POINTS obtained in the ‘Head-to-Head’ games defined as the games in which the teams involved in the tie have played each other. (In other words, 2 points for a win etc when the teams involved in the tie play against each other, Team with most points rank 1 etc).

(ii) The higher Scoring Difference (subtracting the total Scores Against from total Scores For) in the ‘Head-to-Head’ games.

(iii) The higher Scores For in the ‘Head-to-Head’ games.

(iv) If the application of criteria (i) to (iii) results in a team(s) being successful or eliminated but there is still a relevant tie to be decided, criteria (i) to (iii) are to be repeated for the ‘Head-to-Head’ games only of the still tied teams.

(v) The higher Scoring Difference in all games in the League Group. (vi) The higher Scores For in all games in the League Group.

(vii) A Play-Off.
