Na SeamrÓigí
We had a superb Saturday morning in Springfield as our SeamrÓigí completed their third block of the fun and games that is so closely associated with the concept.
We now break for a weekend to facilitate Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. A special thanks to the children and the parents for making the morning so special. We had over 100 children present from Under-4 to Under-6 and the variety of colourful playing gear and joyful smiles on show was great to see. Many more could not make it. Na SeamrÓigí is the lifeblood of our club and we are very proud of everyone involved - children, parents, coaches. We are building a great future for Shamrocks and you are all part of it.
Shay Murtagh Precast Westmeath Senior Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-9 Athlone 1-8.
With the game deep into injury time Mullingar Shamrocks comfortably and patiently defended what commentators in the past routinely referred to as the most dangerous lead in football and particularly in hurling – the two point advantage.
It is still a dangerous lead as we discovered to our cost in Kinnegad on Friday evening. In the 62nd minute the lead was reduced to the less dangerous one point advantage as Athlone’s Noel Mulligan lofted a 45 over the crossbar. Athlone regained possession on the restart and a lobbing shot from Sean Dowd evaded the grasp of Eoin Doran and squirmed under the crossbar for the cruelest of winning goals from the Mullingar Shamrocks perspective. The weekend results of the other matches in the group confirmed the importance of this result for Shamrocks which was a must-not-loose game.
Athlone set down an early marker and launched an attack from the throw-in that ended with a good point by Shane Allen from a difficult free. A similar score from Denis Corroon levelled matters before Denis and Cillian Lynn swopped two more pointed frees. Midway through the half we had the first points from play when Eamon Martin pointed for Athlone and Dean Moore for Shamrocks – Deano with an outside of the boot job. Lorcan Smyth marked from Denis Corroon’s pin-point pass and converted before Benny Martin equalised from play. The half ended as it started with a Shane Allen pointed free to secure an 0-5 to 0-4 interval lead for Athlone.
Shamrocks equalised from the restart when Paddy Fagan kicked the first of his three second half points; a simple Athlone turnover was rewarded when Eamon Martin pointed as the second half settled into a pattern of mass defending and static possession football as both teams patiently attempted to create scoring opportunities. After a gap of thirteen minutes, Shamrocks scored their second point of the half when Conn O’Hanlon pointed on the overlap and equalised (0-6 each). This score was followed by two quick Shamrocks points as Jordan Warde completed a move that began deep in defence with a great turnover by the magisterial Efe Siode; from the restart Paddy Fagan, improviser-in-chief on the night, pointed from an acute angle. A two-point lead was substantial at this stage of the game given the pattern of play but its value was diminished somewhat when Shane Allen kicked his third free of the evening. However, Shamrocks defended with discipline following this score and were rewarded in the 59th minute when Paddy Fagan again hit the target from a difficult angle after some great work by Dean Moore created the opening.
This was before the events described in the opening paragraph evolved and with the final whistle the silence of the Shamrocks contingent could be heard all the way to Springfield. We live in hope.

Minor Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-10 Tubberclare 2-10
A bad evening at the Springfield office for our Minor football team on Monday evening as they went under to Tubberclare with a display that disappointed. With the assistance of a significant, wind Shamrocks with points from Alex Sheerin, Padraig Casey and two from Ryan Kelly led by 0-4 to 0-2 at the interval.
A fine pointed free from Daire O’Connor reduced the deficit early in the second half but this was matched by an effort from play by Paul Keating. It would be another twenty-five minutes before Shamrocks scored from play again. Points by Taylor Slevin and Paul Keegan and a scrambled goal by Tommy Farrell earned Tubberclare a lead they never subsequently lost. Conor Heffernan responded with a couple of pointed frees but when a dipping shot from Tommy Farrell found the net the game was effectively over. A class goal and it had to be a good shot to beat Shamrocks goalkeeper Adam Buckley who had a great game between the posts for Shamrocks. Safe handing, a few timely advances, a few good stops and good restarts were all part of Adam’s repertoire on the night.
On the night, Tubberclare defended in the modern fashion and Shamrocks were unable to unlock the puzzle presented by a massed defence. Turnovers were the inevitable result. On 11 occasions, in the second half, the ball was turned over and 1-3 was scored directly from these reverses of possession and a second half score of 2-8 to 0-6 in favour of Tubberclare
Ryan Kelly kicked a great point from play and Conor Heffernan added two more from frees to complete the Shamrocks total.
Mullingar Shamrocks: Adam Buckley; Adam Glynn, Tye Masterson, Hugh O’Sullivan Sexton (Ben Sheerin); Ben McNamee, Peter Finch, James Flynn; Donnacha Maguire, Callum Rigney Clyne; Ryan Kelly (0-3), Conor Heffernan (0-4), Paul Keating (0-1); Padraig Casey (0-1), Alex Sheerin (0-1), Gavin Pierce (Matt Shaw).
Reusable Waterbottle Scheme ...
You might remember some weeks ago Mullingar Tidy Towns in association with Westmeath County Council launched the brilliant Reusable Waterbottle Scheme. Check out some photos on Mullingar Shamrocks Facebook page of the distribution of the reusable water bottles in Mullingar Shamrocks over the last couple of weeks. Many thanks again to all concerned for their work in organising this fantastic project!
Under-13 League: Mullingar Shamrocks take the points against Athlone
Our under 13's had a good win in round 3 of the League Phase 2 against Athlone in Athlone on Friday evening last. Despite Athlone starting the brighter and causing Shamrocks some difficulties some very good defending from Shay Leavy, MJ Burke and Cian Traynor kept the scoreline low in this period. Shamrocks then started to find their way in the game and points from Colm Clinton and Darragh Daly settled Shamrocks before Conor Matthews got a very important goal which set up Shamrocks up to get on top for the remainder of the half. Oliver Keane and Scott Farrerly kept the score board ticking. A good save from Tom McCaul was also important in this period.
Half time introductions of Evan Nohilly, Sam Philips, Eoin Reddin aswell as all other subs helped Shamrocks keep the pressure on and a good goal from Theo Kelly was the pick of the scores with other forwards also contributed to the scoreboard during the second half.
Shamrocks move on to round 4 now in two weeks’ time.
