Meath produced a below par performance when losing out to neighbours Westmeath in this opening round of the Leinster Minor Hurling Championship played in breezy conditions at TEG Cusack Park Westmeath. PHOTOS

Ger O’Neill’s charges came into this encounter with high hopes but it was Westmeath who controlled the opening half and led at the break 1-8 to 0-5.

The home side had five points on the board before Meath, playing with the breeze, opened their account through team captain Kyle Ennis. The Royals narrowed the gap to two, 0-7 to 0-5 before Westmeath struck for the games opening goal courtesy of their top scorer Conor Heffernan.

Heffernan extended the home sides lead with two quick points in the second half and by the 15th minute Westmeath were well on their way to victory with goals from Ben McNamee and Caolan Ready.

Kyle Ennis gave Meath some hope with a goal but the winners kept the scoreboard working with three points. To their credit Meath kept going and were rewarded to late goals from Eoin Kellegher and Rian Fay but it was a case of too little too late as Westmeath went on to record a comfortable victory.

Westmeath scorers: Conor Heffernan 1-10, Ben McNamee 1-1, Caolan Ready 1-0, Conor Leech 0-2, Winston Larkin McHugh and Dylan Corrigan 0-1 each

Meath scorers: Kyle Ennis 1-3, Rian Fay 1-1, Eoin Kellegher 1-0 each, Fergal Flynn and Patrick Jordan 0-1 each
