Westmeath football stalwart Ger Egan has announced his inter-county retirement.
The Tyrrellspass clubman bows out after a stellar 12-year senior career in which he captained the Lake County to back-to-back Leinster SFC final appearances against an all-conquering Dublin side in 2015 and '16, and won the inaugural Tailteann Cup this year. He also garnered Allianz League Division 3 and 4 honours, and had been one of Westmeath's most consistent performers before suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury during the 2019 All-Ireland SFC qualifier against Clare.
Egan struggled to have the same impact since then and was used mostly as a substitute in the past couple of seasons.
“[He is] the first, and, as of now, only Westmeath man to captain his county to two Leinster finals (2015 & 2016),” Westmeath GAA said in a statement.
“Egan will be forever remembered as one of our county’s most gifted forwards.”
TweetWestmeath GAA would like to wish @geregan10 the very best of luck for the future after he recently announced his retirement from inter-county football.
