Better late than never!

After a 14-year wait, the Westmeath team that won the Allianz Football League Division 2 title in 2008 are to finally receive their medals.

Managed by Tomás Ó Flatharta, Westmeath defeated Dublin in the final at Páirc Tailteann before the Dubs turned the tables with a two-point victory in that year’s Leinster SFC semi-final at Croke Park. Westmeath subsequently suffered a narrow All-Ireland SFC Qualifier defeat to eventual All-Ireland champions Tyrone in Omagh after Damien Healy and Doron Harte were sent off in the space of a minute.

Among the players who will receive their Division 2 medals are Gary Connaughton and John Keane – who won All-Stars that year – and newly-appointed Lake County manager Dessie Dolan.

Several other sets of football and hurling medals will be presented at the function in the Mullingar Park Hotel on Friday, December 2, including the Tailteann Cup medals from this year and the Joe McDonagh Cup medals from last year.
