Championship Results

The second round of Championship fixtures took place this weekend. The Junior 2 kicked off proceedings on Friday night at home in Molloy Park against Delvin. The Downs started the game very well and built up a good lead early in the first half, a lead that they didn’t relinquish throughout. Well done to the team, the management and selectors. Panel: Adam Coneelly, Luke Folan, Dean Egerton, Shane Brogan, Brendan Flynn, Gearóid Sheridan, Gary Cleary, Eoghan Moore, Mark Newman, Niall Gavin, Alan Mooney, Taylor Daly, Keith Carroll, Andrew Shaw, Phillip Martin, Brian Gaffney and Nathan Lynott.

The Senior team made it two wins from two in the second round of the championship against Athlone on Saturday evening in TEG Cusack Park. The Downs led by four points at the half time interval following two goals from Niall Mitchell with the half-time score reading 2-04 to 0-6. The next half was a tight affair with Athlone being awarded a penalty leaving only one point between the sides heading into the final quarter. Both sides had their chances to claim the win but it was The Downs who held their composure to hold on for victory with a three points to spare at the final whistle. Final score: 2-09 to 1-09. Next up is Garrycastle in two weeks time. Team: Trevor Martin, Mark Kelly, Peter Murray, Conor Gavin, Conor Coughlan, Darragh Egerton, Joe Moran, Dean Clarke, Johnny Lynam, Ciarán Nolan, Conor Murray, Liam Moran, Kevin O’Sullivan, Niall Mitchell, Ian Martin. The Junior 1 team faced Athlone on Sunday morning in Rochfortbridge. Both teams had periods of dominance but it was The Downs who finished the stronger to claim the points on offer. The Downs scored four goals which was ultimately the difference between the sides. Team: Eoin Paterson, Cian Carty, Trevor Fitzpatrick, Liam Faulkner, Cian McCourt, Oisín Murphy, Mark Conroy, James Drumm, Eanna Burke, Dec Lynam, Ben Harte, Shane Raleigh, Jack Carroll, Tom Tuite. Subs used: Niall Gavin, Jack Hogan, Ciarán Seery.

Underage News

Molloy Park was a busy venue on Saturday morning with the U7s, U9’s and U 11’s all in action in GoGame blitzes. Great credit to the coaches and mentors and in particular the players for putting a great display of skills. Opposition on the day were Multy, Killucan and Delvin. Well done to all involved.

Best of luck to the U13 boys who take on Lilliput Gaels this coming Friday in the championship semi-final.

LGFA

Congratulations to our Senior Ladies Division 5 team who were victorious in the League final last Friday in Tubberclair versus Goldsmith Girls. The first half saw the Downs scoring three goals to leave the score 3-7 to 0-6 at half time in favour of the The Downs. Na Dúnta Ladies added a further three goals in the second half with the final score reading 6-12 to 1-13. This was an excellent display by the whole panel most of whom are getting their first taste of adult football this year. Well done to team management of Paddy Monaghan, Kevin Staunton Paddy Walsh and Christy Doyle.

Commiserations to our U16 girls who battled hard against a strong Mullingar Shamrocks side last Tuesday evening in the first round of the championship. Better days ahead for these ladies.

Our U14’s played Milltown last Thursday. The girls never gave up but the result didn’t go their way.

The U10s travelled to Killucan on Saturday morning. The Downs fielded two teams and were looking well togged out in their new jerseys provided by Lidl (stamp collection). Opposition on the day was from Killucan, St. Paul’s Delvin, Ballycomoyle, Multyfarnham and St. Mary’s Rochfortbridge. Thanks to Killucan who as usual were superb hosts.
