Club Notes 21/06/2021:

Junior B Championship:

St Lomans Mullingar 4-09 Milltown 2-11

St Lomans welcomed Milltown to Lakepoint Park last Tuesday evening. Conan O’Hara opened the scoring for the Blues. Milltown dominated the first half however scoring 1-08 across the first half. Among the bright spots for the Blues was Cian Daly who scored a goal mid-way through the first half after combining well with Cian Cleary, Daly Buried the ball into the top corner leaving the goalkeeper with no chance. The Saints trailed by seven at half time but would be shooting into a strong breeze in the second half.

The Hosts started the second half like a house on fire with Daly on target with a point. Daly was then involved in a brilliant handpassing move, with Cian Cleary and the former laid the ball on a plate for Killian Browne who netted on his Championship debut. Milltown responded well hitting a quick-fire goal and point. There were more goals to come though as Eoghan O’Keefe’s inch perfect pass found Johnny Mee and the latter slotted into the net for Lomans third goal of the night. The Saints then hit three unanswered points through Johnny Mee, Conan O’Hara and Adam Lynch which levelled proceedings. Both sides traded points in the closing stages with O’Hara and Daly pointing for Lomans. With nothing between the sides, the Hosts stepped up in the dying moments. First Conan O’Hara’s looping effort saw The Mullingar men take the lead. Cleary and O’Hara then increased the gap to three. Then another brilliant team goal very similar to the second, saw the Blues all but seal the victory, Killian Browne supplied the finish capping off a memorable junior debut. St Lomans finished 4-point winners on a scoreline of 4-09 to 2-11.

On the night, Ethan Browne and Evan Johnson put in good performances at the back and excelled on their Junior Championship debut. Conan O’Hara was reliable as ever. Johnny Mee, Killian Browne, Andrew Daly and Conor Cochrane put in excellent performances after being introduced from the substitutes bench. However, Cian Daly was undoubtedly man of the Match, his pace proved to be the stuff of nightmares for the Visitors, he was heavily involved in the play throughout as well as finishing with a scoring tally of 1-01.

Under 15 Division 1 2020 Championship Final:

St Lomans Mullingar 1-08 Athlone 1-12

St Lomans Mullingar’s Under 15 side travelled to Kinnegad last week to play the outstanding final from last year’s season which was delayed due to the covid-19 pandemic. Both sides traded scores in the opening stages with Daniel McCann on target for the Blues with a double. Lomans then hit the front with a brilliant goal from Oisín O’Hara driving through the middle of the Athlone defence and firing a powerful shot into the roof of the net. The sides once again exchanged scores with the silky McCann once again on the scoresheet for the Saints. Athlone hit a purple patch before the break hitting three unanswered points to tie the match and leave things evenly poised heading into the Second Half.

The Shannon-siders hit three more points after the break with no reply, with Johnny Maher very influential. In truth Athlone’s dominance in the middle third of the match was probably the decisive period at the end of the day. The Blues replied with McCann and Mark Tunney on target with excellent points. However, a goal for Athlone midway through the second half increased their advantage to five points, and in a game where scores were at a premium it was a difficult haul to overturn. McCann’s free reduced the arrears and then an excellent point from substitute JJ McNamee brought the Mullingar men within three points. The Blues searched for a late goal to force extra time in the Closing stages but the Athlone rear-guard held firm. A late point for Athlone confirmed the win and saw them run out four-point winners.

Congratulations to Athlone who were the better side on the night. St Lomans can be proud of what they achieved throughout the year, and on the night, they kept fighting until the bitter end, showing a never say die-attitude. The Lads covered every blade of grass on the pitch on the night in search of the win and at the end of the day that is all you can ask for. Seanie Bracken, Ross Killalea and Daniel McCann were the individuals who excelled on the night for Lomans with McCann ending up with a tally of six points. Well done to all our players who showed excellent commitment throughout last Season and on the night and each player can be proud of themselves, there all have very bright futures ahead! Lastly a big thanks to the management team of Alan Bracken, Gary Devine and Seamus Tunney for devoting their time and effort to the lads over the last 18 months.

Under 13 2020 Division 1 Final:

St Lomans Mullingar 3-11 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-09

St Lomans Mullingar’s Under 13 side welcomed neighbours Mullingar Shamrocks to Lakepoint Park last week to play the outstanding final from last year’s season which was delayed due to the covid-19 pandemic. The visitors had the better of the sides in the early stages, outscoring Lomans 4 points to 1 with Dylan Hayes on target for the Hosts. However, the Blues began to stamp their authority on the match before the break, hitting 1-08 without reply. Beau Green’s point started it off, followed by a beautiful curling effort from Jack McCann. Sean Plunkett brought the Saints level before McCann’s free saw the Blues take the lead for the first time. Eoin Meehan’s Free and another point from Dylan Hayes brought Lomans further clear. The host increased the gap when Conor Liston won the ball back high up the pitch and pointed coolly to increase the lead to four points. The Blues then struck another blow before half time when Dylan Hayes rifled the ball into the Shamrocks net and they weren’t finished there as Sean Byrne and Adam Meehan pointed before the break to leave the score line at 1-09 to 0-04 at the Interval.

The visitors once again started the Second Half the brighter, outscoring The Saints 5 points to 1 in the opening stages (Sean Byrne registering his second point of the match for Lomans) and reducing the arrears to a mere four points. The Blues were hanging on for large parts of the second half but when Jack McCann hit a rocket into the shamrocks net for the second goal of the match the Blues had firm control once again in the closing stages. McCann hit another brilliant goal late on to put the icing on the cake, Sean Byrne then had the last word with a well-taken point to see The Blues run out eleven-point winners, which in truth was harsh on Shamrocks as the two team were evenly matched for large stages of the match.

Saint Lomans were fantastic all over the park and every one of the players put in an immense performance. Adam Kenny and Conor Liston were excellent in defence. Conor Casey was dominant in midfield. Jack McCann, Sean Byrne and Dylan Hayes were deadly up front. Congratulations to all the players whose hard work over the last 18 months came to fruition on the night. Commiserations to Mullingar Shamrocks who played a great game and fought to the bitter end. Finally, a big thanks to coaches Tony Plunkett and Adrian Hogg for devoting their time and effort to the lads!
