Under 15 county final: 2020 U15 Div 3 Football Championship Multyfarnham 4-7 St Josephs 1-8

A tremendous all round team performance saw Multyfarnham secure the clubs first underage title in years after a deserved victory over a well matched St Josephs outfit. This Multyfarnham squad had tasted finals defeat at both u13 and u14 level over the last two years which made last Mondays victory at Mullingar Shamrocks grounds all the sweeter.

After a nervous first 15 mins, Multy led by 3 points to 2 scorers (2 great scores from play by Johnny Kluch and 1 from Matthew Thornton). Multy stepped it up after the water break with a brace of points and a classy individual goal from the talented Robert O’Connor who drove through the heart of the St Josephs defence and drilled the ball to back of the net. Multy started to get on top winning a lot of ball around half back and midfield area and they were rewarded for their efforts with two brilliantly worked team goals which came in quick succession. The first goal came from Keelan Varley after a move involving Joseph Kelly, the second coming from Jack Leavey who started the initial move in midfield and ended with him following the play, collecting the ball on the edge of the box and finishing brilliantly to the back of the net. That left Multy 11 points up with 5 mins left to half time. To their credit St Josephs responded quickly with a goal and point to leave the half time score 3-4 to 1-3.

With the foundation built, the Multy lads would have felt confident of closing out the game as they took to the field for the second half. St Josephs however, started brightly forcing Multy to defend deep within their own half. The pressure led to several frees for St Josephs and unfortunately Multys full back Ronan Greene picked up two yellow cards in short order. Ronan had up to that point been having one of his best performances in a Multy jersey.

Down to 14 men, Multy dug deep and reorganised themselves. A free from Matthew Thornton and a brilliant point from Captain Gareth Mullaniff steadied the ship and as St Josephs piled on the pressure, the Multy rear guard held firm with a tremendous defensive effort for the remaining 20 mins with great performances on the day from Sean Og Brenna, Kevin Donnelly, Jake O’Neill, Donna Fiadh, CJ Tighe backed up with a great performance from Adam Meehan in goals.

With 10 mins remaining Multy led by four as St Josephs picked off some great scores after sustained pressure. After another counter attack led by CJ Tighe and Johnny Kluch, Multy were awarded a free 40 yards out which was converted by Matthew Thornton leaving Multy 5 points clear. With time running out and St Josephs pushing up the field, Multy substitute Luke Smyth latched on to a long ball and put the game to bed with a super strike to the top left hand corner of the net.

To the delight of his teammates and the Multy supporters in attendance, Captain Gareth Mullaniff who contributed two great scores from play on the day accepted the U15 Div 3 title on behalf of his team. Huge credit to coach Ciaran “Square” McCabe supported by David “Mousey” Kelly for their efforts throughout the last 12 months keeping the lads fit and ready for the big day. Thanks to all the supporters who came out to congratulate the team on their return to the village……Multy Abu!!Scorers for Multy on the day.Gareth Mullaniff (0-2) Johnny Kluch (0-2), Matthew Thornton (0-3), Robert O’Connor (1-0), Keelan Varley (1-0), Jack Leavey (1-0), Luke Smith (1-0)
