Junior Championship Semi Final Win for St Joseph’s Ladies V Athlone Ladies
We played our Junior Championship Semi-final last Sunday evening the 6th September against Athlone Ladies in Pairc Chiaran, Athlone. It was never going to be easy at this stage of the completion against an experienced Athlone Ladies side with home advantage. The weather was perfect for football with no rain and very little wind. Whatever breeze that was in it was to St Josephs advantage in the first half. We started strong and dominated the first quarter with great play from the team who were moving the ball with great pace. Karen Keegan (Player of the match) scored our first goal of the night and we were in hard luck for another as it was saved by Athlone’s excellent Keeper on the night Aoife Temple, diving to her right and getting her fingertips to the ball. After the water break Athlone kicked into gear and brought the game level coming up to the half time whistle. We finished the half with a point from play and led by the minimum at the turn of play. The second half was a frantic affair as both teams gave it everything in this knockout contest. Our back line of Cliona McCormack, Clodagh McCormack and Claire Conlon were in top form as were the half back line of Niamh Carney, Roisin Killian and Joyce Conway. Midfield on the day was Orla Robbins and Ellie Conway who both had super games and covered every blade of grass. Our half forwards of Roisin Kealy, Sinead Robbins and Karen Keagan were showing well for the ball ably assisted by the full forward line up of Lauren McDonnell, Sharon Boland and Erin Pettit. Sharon was playing in the back line in earlier games but was like a duck to water in the forwards and had a super game. It was good to see all our forwards scoring on the night and shows the depth and breadth of talent on show. The half toed and froed with our majors coming from Erin Pettit who cracked one into the top corner and Roisin Kealy who went 1 on 1 with the keeper and won. Laura Conlon and Caoilinn Elliffe both came on as subs and played their part in what was a momentous achievement for this young team. The game ended with a score line of St Joseph’s Ladies 3-14 to Athlone Ladies 3-10.
