ACFL Division 1A:

St Loman’s Mullingar 2-12 Coralstown Kinnegad 0-13

Last Monday Night saw the long awaited return of competitive senior football to Lakepoint Park. It was very difficult to tell how this game would go, as in terms of the covid-19 pandemic we are uncharted territory but on the night both sets of players were very professional and handled the occasion quite well. This was St Loman’s first match in the newly formed Division 1a which holds the opposition of Kinnegad, Mullingar Shamrocks and Shandonagh.

St Loman’s were quick out of the Blocks, Ronan O’Toole was on target with a well-taken point. The Saints built on their good start when a wonderful team move culminated with Sam McCartan finding TJ Cox and the latter as usual, made no mistake finding the net with consummate ease. John Heslin then got on the scoresheet with a point only for it to be cancelled out by a score for the visitors. The teams continued to trade scores with Heslin pointing from play and Ger Leech pointing for Coralstown. The Blues had the opportunity to increase their lead after Ronan O’Toole was brought down inside the area, giving referee Micky Dan Murtagh no option but to point to the spot. However, John Heslin’s penalty was well saved by The Kinnegad Goalkeeper who went on to make a number of excellent stops on the night. The Visitors got a foot-hold late on in the half scoring a pointed free, and two from play either side of an excellent Loman’s point from Paul Whelehan. The Hosts went in three points to the good at the interval.

After the break the Saints struck early with another sweeping team move involving Ronan O’Toole, Rory Sheahan and TJ Cox, which Cox finished with aplomb into the net for his and the Blues Second goal of the game. A common theme of the second half was Kinnegad scoring from placed balls as they did twice after conceding their second goal to lower the deficit to four points. After this both sides traded scores frequently with 4 points each. In this spell the Blues got their scores from Cox, O’Toole and a double from Heslin. Loman’s finished the game convincingly with three well taken Points, Paul Whelehan was on target for his second, as was John Heslin. The Final score of the match went to substitute Ken Casey who utilised the new ‘Mark’ rule and pointed from the resulting free himself.

On the Night the stand out performers were Ronan O’Toole, Sean Flanagan and TJ Cox. Cox for his killer instinct in front of goal especially on a night where chances certainly were not aplenty, Cox was certainly efficient in front of goal. Flanagan was fantastic and dominated the midfield battle with excellent fielding and his engine driving him all over the park. O’Toole however was wonderful on the night in his favoured role of centre forward, he was the conductor of the Loman’s orchestra and Kinnegad found it very difficult to keep him quiet.

A good win for Loman’s but in truth both teams will be keen to turn their attention to Sunday where the Blues face Tyrellspass at 7pm in TEG Cusack Park in the first round of this year’s Senior Championship. To apply for tickets you must have paid your club membership which can be paid at anythime via Clubforce and anybody wanting a ticket must contact Declan Cox or Pat McCartan before Tuesday July 28th.

Fairgreen Ladies Senior Championship:

St Loman’s Mullingar 3-05 St Mary’s Rochfortbridge 4-16

St Loman’s senior ladies began their championship exploits with a visit to the reigning County Champions St Mary’s Rochfortbridge.  The hosts started the quicker reeling off six points. However the Blues gathered themselves and regrouped and responded with two fantastic goals. The first game from Ciara Blundell who was a constant here all afternoon and she fired a fierce shot into the top corner. Shortly afterwards Lucy McCartan got a second for The Saints, lobbing the ball over the on rushing Rochfortbridge goalkeeper. The Hosts responded with a point, only for it to be cancelled out by Evie Daly who slotted over the visitors firth point of the match. The 5 minutes before half time were perhaps the undoing of Stephen Gallagher’s troops. With Rochfortbridge reeling off 2-04 without reply to give them a ten point lead at the break.

The Second half was cagey with not single score in the first ten minutes of the half. The Bridge once again hit a killer blow with two goals within a minute of each other. Vicky Carr and Lucy McCartan hit back with two wonderful points. Moments Later Ciara Blundell fired in her second goal to bring the deficit back to ten points. The hosts finished strongly with 4 points, in this period Loman’s hit two points of their own through Lucy McCartan and Ciara Blundell. The Full time whistle blew with the Hosts running out deserving winners.  However this certainly was a spirited performance from the Saints who fought tooth and nail from the first whistle to the last the last. The performance doesn’t quite tell the entire story as the game was much more competitive than the score-line suggests. Also to put this result into context, in the same fixture last year the Bridge ran out winners by over forty points. This team is improving and will certainly continue to do so.

There were a number of stand-out performers for Loman’s. Skipper Julie Mclaughlin’s work-rate was phenomenal and she never gave in at any stage. Up front Lucy McCartan and Ciara Blundell were constant threats.  Megan Ennis’ work rate also epitomised the spirit of the Blues on the night. Finally the club wishes a speedy recovery to full-back Emma Keena who suffered a nasty injury on the night.

ACFL Division 4:

Shandonagh 3-13 St. Lomans Mullingar 1-06

Due to Covid restrictions, this game was played over four 15-minute quarters, as opposed to the customary two 30-minute halves. To put it simply, St. Lomans dominated the third quarter of this game, with Shandonagh dominating the other 3 quarters to run out worthy winners.

Despite the disappointing score line there were still many positives to take from this game, the first game to be played since March. It’s very encouraging to see some of the club’s younger players progressing to adult football, players like Keelan Sleator, Hugh Mulhern (scorer of a cracking goal), Rory Matthews (pulled off some great saves), Niall Mulcaire etc, who all acquitted themselves well. As well as welcoming newcomer Darren Kavanagh on to panel we also saw the return of several players back to the Blues, lads like Johnathan Nugent, Conor Cochrane, Adam Lynch, Niall McGurran, James Kelly and James Baker who all showed flashes of magic tonight and are a great addition to any squad.

Team; Rory Matthews, Keelan Sleator, Senan Russell, Tristan Johnson, Kyle Smith, Nigel Graham, Adam Carroll (c), Frank Kavanagh, Eoghan O’Keeffe, Cian Cleary (0-2), Christy Gilbert, Niall Mulcaire, Conor Cochrane (0-3), Adam Lynch & Niall McGurran (0-1). Subs; Hugh Mulhern (1-0), Sean Regan, James Kelly, Johnathan Nugent, Shane Cleary, James Baker, Stevie Sheridan, Gary Bridges & Darren Kavanagh.

Under 16 Girls Championship:

St Lomans 5-12 Milltownpass 4-07

Our under 16 girls claimed their first win of the season with an eight point win over Milltownpass in a frantic encounter. St Loman’s were a point to the good at half time with points from Jane Duggan, Niamh McGinley, Annie Kilmurray and three points from Caoime  Kilmurray. These points coupled with a gaol by Annie Kilmurray gave the hosts a slender advantage going into the interval.

The second half was a ding dong encounter and a gaol fest. Substitute Meabh O’Hara came on and scored two poachers goals to give the Blues the upper hand. Paige Matthews was on target with a point and a quick-fire goal and point from Caoimhe Kilmurray kept the hosts in the driving seat. Milltown made the Saints seat with three goals in quick succession. However the Blues never panicked and responded with three points from Keelie Mulderry, Rachel McKenna and Katie Kilmurray. Caoimhe Kilmurray got another goal and point to see the hosts run out eight-point winners.
