Southern Gaels club notes

Return to Games

Great news there will be hurling this year at club and inter county levels. Following the most recent announcements training will return in groups at the end of June and matches at the end of July. The county adult and juvenile boards are busy making plans for championship formats and these will be released shortly. In the meantime players can get back to serious training as we now know there will be sport, fun and games for 2020. A series of regulations will be released in connection with the return to training and games and all players, mentors and parents/guardians are expected to adhere to these. Everyone will be advised as to all regulations by their team mentors and or club officials over the next few weeks. Thank you for your support of our club during the lockdown and now I hope you will enjoy the return to hurling.

Lockdown Event Three

Southern Gaels recently held their third lockdown event. It included a Quiz, Bingo and Skills Video Competition. The quiz winners were the Lee family, the Jordan/Shields family, the Ó Duibhir family and the Cosgrove family. Siomha Mitchell, Luke Duffy and Ruairí Ó Duibhir scooped the Bingo prizes and Gearóid Mc Carthy, Conleth and Fiachra Feeney and Sean and Myles Duffy topped the skills demos. Thanks to Martin Geary and Tommy Murphy who were the men behind the inspiration and technology. Money gathered from the event was donated to the Athlone branch of the Samaritans.

From the Archives

Southern Gaels was founded in 1973 following the amalgamation of Drumraney and Athlone hurling clubs both of whom were struggling. One of the earliest club members was Paddy Mc Cormack from Beech Park West. Paddy, now in his 90's is originally from Ballynacarrigy. He was a mentor with the Ballymahon Road/Beech Park juvenile Street League teams. He then managed and trained club teams and became one of the 'Three Wise Men' with Johnny Moran and Frank Young. They led their charges to county championship titles at Under 12, 14, 16, and 18 levels. Later they manager the adult team to win the 1993 Junior Championship and Paddy was again on board when the club won the Junior B Championship in 2000, 2001 and 2002. Paddy is a legend in Southern Gaels and served on the committee from the 1970's through to the early 2000's. He is now the club's Honory Life President. A man with a wonderful sense of humour and a great storyteller Paddy has given a lifetime to hurling and helped generations of young Athlone people derive enjoyment from sport. We wish him well and look forward to a great night with him when we celebrate our Golden Jubilee in June 2023.

All in the club wish hurling team mentor and committee member Vera Corcoran the best following her recent illness.
