Leinster Senior Hurling Championship
We took on Mount Leinster Rangers of Carlow in the first round of this competition last Sunday in Cusack Park. The first half was very physical and stop start with a lot of frees on both sides. Our opponents had been at this stage twice before, and their experience showed from the off as they hunted in packs and stifled many of our forward movements. Despite this, we managed to hold a three point lead after twenty-nine minutes of play, 0-7 to 0-4. Castletown were awarded a free following a heavy challenge on Neal Kirby, and Niall O' Brien's effort came back off the upright where Alan Mangan reacted quickest to stroke the ball across the line. Mount Leinster added a point immediately from the puck-out to leave us with a five point advantage at half time, 1-7 to 0-5. Any thoughts of maintaining that lead and weathering a comeback by the visitors were dashed upon the restart. The 'Rangers' scored a goal straight from the throw in, and added four points to Castletowns' one over the next ten minutes to lead by a point, 1-9 to 1-8. They had opened up a three point lead by the twenty first minute of the second half before Niall O'Brien and Aonghus Clarke reduced the arrears to one, but we could not find an equaliser. Castletown added two more points through David Fennell and a Niall O' Brien free, but Mount Leinster Rangers added three of their own to march on to the semi finals on a scoreline of 1-15 to 1-13. There is no shame in defeat here and should Castletown ever find themselves in this position again, they will certainly have learned from the experience. We wish Mount Leinster Rangers the best of luck in the remainder of the competition. Team: Paddy Maloney, Paul Fennell, Emmett Dalton, Eamonn Clarke, Liam Varley, Ronan Whelan 0-1, Dean McDermott, David Fennell 0-1, Neal Kirby, Aonghus Clarke 0-1, Niall O'Brien 0-10 (8f), David Lynch, Blaine Lahart, Alan Mangan 1-0, Kieran Glennon. Subs Used: Diarmuid Garvin, Shane Clavin, Patrick Clarke, Derek Gallagher, Colin O'Brien.
