Longford ensured themselves a spot in the race for promotion to Division 3 of the Allianz FL with two rounds remaining after securing a vital win over neighbours Leitrim.

It finished 1-16 to 0-13 at Pearse Park, where Cathal McCabe’s early goal proved key for the hosts as they led by seven after the opening 15 minutes.

The early dismissal of ace attacker Ryan O’Rourke on a black card proved a blow for Andy Moran’s men, as did the straight red card issued to midfielder Jack Gilheaney midway through the second-half.

The results sees Longford sit in joint second place along with Leitrim, Wexford and Carlow on six points behind Laois, who have 10, with two rounds remaining.

Meanwhile, in Bansha, Waterford secured their first point of the campaign by holding Tipperary to a 1-13 to 0-16 draw.

Alan Dunwoody's goal had the Deise men five points up after 20 minutes ahead of the hosts battling back to eventually hold a one-point lead in injury-time when Jason Curry's free denied them a second win in the campaign.
