The Claddagh Gaels Ladies Gaelic Football Team with the Luton Sports Team of the Year Award.
The 2013 Luton Sports Network Annual Awards took place on Thursday night (27th March) and The Claddagh Gaels Ladies Gaelic Football Team took home Luton Sports Team of the Year!
The awards evening was held at Venue 360 in Luton and hosted by England Ladies Football Captain, Casey Stoney. The Claddagh Gaels took home the prestigious award after a very successful year winning the Warwickshire Ladies Gaelic Football League, reaching the Warwickshire Championship Final and winning the Hertfordshire 9 a-side tournament. They were also recognised for their efforts in youth development with a quarter of the team being under 18.
The Claddagh Gaels were established in 2009 and in the last 6 years have progressed from a small club with struggling numbers to a thriving panel of over 35 players from all ages and origins. The team are represented by girls from over 10 different counties in Ireland as well as half the team being born and bred Lutonions. The team have been supported from day one by their sponsor Martin Maloney who has also just won Erris Exile of the Year in Co. Mayo for his contribution to communities and charities in Britain.
Claddagh Gaels Manager Bill Barrett, also from Mayo, said "The whole club was delighted to find out we were nominated for this award and to have gone on to win it is a major achievement for us. Our team of players and coaches work very hard throughout the 10 month season and we're very happy to have received recognition for it. We hope to make 2014 an even bigger year for the Claddagh Gaels."
