London SHC final: ref felled as Emmetts win titanic tussle

October 27, 2019

Four players saw red cards in this afternoon's London SHC final

Robert Emmets 1-25

St Gabriel's 3-17

Two periods of extra-time were required to separate Robert Emmets and St Gabriel's in a tempestuous London SHC final at McGovern Park in Ruislip.

Four players saw red, while the referee was pushed to the ground in the second half as the Emmetts eventually prevailed.

St Gabriel's had full back Tom Higgins sent off in the first half, but still managed to take a 3-6 to 1-6 lead into the break thanks to goals from Paddy Naughton (two) and Dan Glynn after Benny McCarry had grabbed the opening goal for the winners.

Ben Conroy got Emmets back into it with the first four points of the second half before Tadgh Healy (Emmets) and Dave Nolan (Gabriel's) were both dismissed, which was followed by the referee being shoved to the ground.

Conroy, who finished with a dozen points, edged Emmets ahead before Glynn forced extra-time for their Wembley-based opponents.

The sides were still deadlocked at the end of extra-time, but Emmets finally gained the upper hand in the second additional 20 minutes as they were crowned champions for an eighth time.
