An Mhaigh Tir na nÓg G.A.C Annual Dinner Dance Over 250 proud members and friends of An Mhaigh Tir na nOg G.A.C. packed into Kelly's Inn, Garvaghy last Friday for our 2007 Annual Dinner Dance and Presentation Night. As the biggest event in our club's social calendar, it turned out to be another hugely successful and very special night. There was glitz, glamour and no shortage of great entertainment as the organisers pulled out all the stops to make this a truly memorable occasion. Club Chairman P.B. Laverty began proceedings by offically welcoming everyone in attendance and, following a short prayer led by Frankie Duffy, those present were treated to a delicious four course meal. Afterwards, Rev Fr Darragh P.P. was called upon to say a few words. He described the gathering of Moy Gaels as "one big family" and went on to pay his own special tribute to the victorious Tir na nOg Under 16 squad and management as well as the members of the 1982 I.F.C. winning side who were to be honoured on the night. Fr Darragh then handed over to our regular M.C. Mickey Kavanagh who once again performed these duties in splendid fashion. Ably assisted on stage by Kevin Mallon, Mickey ensured the presentation ceremony ran smoothly and was carried out in a very professional manner. His first task was to welcome special guest Joe McMahon onto the platform, and the Tyrone football star received a great reception as he handed over each of the various team and individual awards. Moy's 2007 championship winning Under 16 squad was first up for the presentations. After the management team of Martin Deeney, Tommy Donohue, Paul Dynes and Paud Loughran were acknowledged for their efforts this year, each of the following players were called up individually to accept their medals: Stephen Beaddie, Matthew Dynes, Nathan Brady, Jim Kelly, Adrian O'Neill, Tiarnan Donohue, Eoghan O'Neill, Jack Kelly, Daniel Beaddie, Odhran Burke, Anthony McGuckian, Ryan Nugent, Aaron Donaghy, Cormac O'Neill, Peter Mallon, Patrick Fox, Harry Loughran, Mark Gribbin, Eunan Deeney, Ryan Mallon, Conor Kelly and Shane McKeown. During the course of the glittering presentation ceremony, a number of Moy ladies were called up to receive a bouquet of flowers. They were: Patricia Conroy (Ladies Football Secretary); Michelle Gribbin (Dinner Dance Organiser); Mary Daly (Club Secretary for over 20 years); Geraldine Fox (one of the club physios); and Tanya Lavery and Siobhan Mallon (wives of the Senior Team Management). There were also special presentations made to the following club members: Niall Conlon and Colin Mackle (Senior Ladies Team Management); Dee Lavery and Gerry Mallon (Senior Men's Team Management); Declan Cavanagh (Reserve Team Management); Ryan Kelly (2007 Tyrone County Senior Scor Champion for Solo Singing); and John McGurk (Moy's number one supporter and ever loyal member) whose popularity earned him a standing ovation from the large attendance. Next up were the main annual prizegiving awards which were presented to the following members: Eimear McKearney, who accepted the Michael Conroy Cup for Ladies Senior Player of the Year; Ciaran Campbell, who received the Harry Lavery Shield for Men's Reserve Player of the Year; Colin Mackle (Club Person of the Year); Peter Duffy (Hall of Fame award); and Mark Jordan, who collected the Tom McKearney Trophy for Men's Senior Player of the Year. The final presentation of the night was reserved for the 1982 Moy Intermediate Championship winning squad and management. To mark the 25th anniversary of that famous triumph, the club presented each member with a framed team picture and special commemorative medal. Chairman P.B. Laverty introduced each of these former players to come up and accept their anniverary gifts: Ned Coyne (captain), Peter Duffy, Mickey Kavanagh, Teddy Cavanagh, Paul Kavanagh, Brendan Casey, Peter O'Neill, Colm Donaghy, Plunkett Donaghy, Paul Lavery, Paul Donaghy, Liam Donaghy, Martin Cavanagh, Seanie Donaghy, Paul Dynes, Aidan Fox, Martin McCrilly, Anthony Rafferty and Charlie Rafferty. Members of the 1982 management team were also honoured on the night. They were: Charlie Lavery (Redford); the late Harry Lavery R.I.P, whose wife Rosaleen accepted a gift on her husband's behalf; and the late Pat Donaghy R.I.P., whose wife Eileen accepted a gift on her husband's behalf. Meanwhile, those 1982 squad members who were unable to attend on the night were Peter McLaughlin (USA), Gerard Foley (USA), Seamus Coyne (Canada), James McCann, Kieran Lavery, Patsy Cavanagh and Adrian Anderson. One other significant presentation made on the night was to our special guest of honour, Joe McMahon. The Omagh St Enda's and Tyrone senior star also made a brilliant speech in which he showed an in-depth knowledge of the Moy club and praised the valued contribution of many members to the club and county cause. He also added a degree of humour to proceedings by 'having a dig' at his well known county colleague Sean Cavanagh for his fashion sense among other things! Immediately after the presentations had ended, that well known 'double-act' of Peter McKearney and Philip McQuade took to the stage to hold a mini-auction which helped raise some funds for the club. Among the prizes up for auction were: a specially framed Moy/Tyrone Jersey sponsored by the McAvoy group and signed by our four current county senior stars; an O'Neills football signed by the Tyrone team; a specially framed and signed Ireland International Rules jersey; and an old Moy jersey signed by members of the 1982 IFC winning panel. A wonderful night was then brought to an end by musical entertainment from popular band Manhattan. Gaels danced the night away and had a wonderful time. Club officer Frankie Duffy ensured that many images from this year's event was captured on both camera and video. Well done to everyone involved in organising what was a terrific night and thanks to all those who came along and showed their support. Cookstown Fr Rocks Cookstown under 21s reached the final of the championship with a comprehensive victory over Clonoe on Saturday past. The Fr Rocks played some great football in difficult conditions. It was Clonoe who opened the scoring from a free kick in the first minute, before Marty Murray replied, with the equaliser from a dead ball. Clonoe responded with another free kick, following a dubious refereeing decision in the fifth minute of the game. Cookstown began to settle into the game and great support play from the impressive triumvirate of Mulgrew, Murray and Martin Hughes allowed them to swiftly link defence with attack. Playing into a strong wind Fr Rocks patient approach play ensured that they were always in control. A great score from Jason Quinn, and another Martin Murray point from play left Cookstown with a two point lead. The strong breeze always kept Clonoe in contention, however further scores from Raymond Mulgrew and Paddy Kelly ensured a one point lead at half time in favour of the Rocks. Cookstown entered the second half in confident mood boosted by a strong wind at their backs. It was Clonoe however, who got the first score of the second half, before Cookstown began to play their best football of the game. The Rocks kicked six wonderful scores in a row, all from play, the third of which a well worked goal from the boot of Jason Quinn, in between that, scores from Raymond Mulgrew, Marty Murray, Paddy Kelly and Ryan Pickering set the seal on the Cookstown victory. Clonoe did respond with two well taken scores but Cookstown were not to be outdone with Conor O'Hare and man of the match Murray kicking two excellent scores from distance. This was a great team performance from Cookstown, the half backline in particular were impressive, driving forward at every opportunity and winning great breaking ball throughout the game. The Rocks will enter next weeks final in confident mood, this talented squad has proven in the past that they can win championships. Victory over Coalisland would be a great end to a successful campaign. Throw in at Ardboe is at 1:30pm next Sunday. All support is welcome. Multicultural Fr Rocks Fr Rocks currently have a number of players who represent the club at youth level from a wide range of different cultural backgrounds. The club would like to open the gates to all international children, who are part of the influx of new immigrants in Cookstown . If you are new to the area why not send your children along to Fr Rocks underage training. It is a great way to meet new friends, and learn the universal language of Gaelic Games.
