An Charraig Mhor GFC Annual Congress

December 10, 2008
The Annual Congress of the Carrickmore club took place last Sunday in the club rooms and was as usual well attended by club members. Outgoing Chairman Mick Daly, in his address, paid tribute to the dedication of the players, committee, club members, supporters and workers. Mick stated that he 'was honoured to be elected chairman of this great club last year' and he pointed to the various jobs undertaken to help the club progress through 2008 which included appointment of managers, trainers and coaches at all levels and also the completion of a highly successful draw in the early part of the year. Mick continued 'The ladies had great success, winning the senior championship and league double which brings their SFC total to 11 since 1992. We would like to congratulate three players who were involved in all of these championship successes - Elish Gormley, Lynette McShane (Hughes) and Maire Grogan'. Turning to the men he said that 'Although unbeaten in the league we still could not claim the Senior ACL title and had to be content with the Reserve Title as consolation. Our hopes of winning the O'Neill Cup will have to wait for at least another year. Our club has become conditioned in that there is an expectation to win the championship every year and any year that we don't win it we are deemed as failures. This club needs to win championships'. Focusing on county level and our clubmen involved Mick commented that 'This has been an exceptional year in Tyrone football with the winning of the Sam Maguire and Tom Markham All Ireland Cups. Our club played a significant role in this historic double. We congratulate minor manager Raymond Munroe. We also congratulate minor playing member Michael Slane who was part of Raymond Munroe's squad. Congratulations to Conor Gormley who has collected his third All -lreland medal, and he unable to attend here today because he is celebrating his third All Star success with a well deserving break in San Francisco. At this point Mick continued. 'I would like to congratulate all the managers and players at every grade who performed and competed with the best in Tyrone. You can see in all the reports that we are improving and being more competitive at all under age grades and the Thursday evening coaching for Under 6's, 8's, 10's, and 12's is still very successful and beginning to reap the rewards. We thank Omagh District Council for helping us fund works carried out last year and the beginning of this year. Thanks also to the Ulster Council and Central Council for their financial contribution towards the construction of the Nally Stand. We offer our condolences to the families of four former players and members who passed away this year, namely, Jimmy McCallan, Paddy Grogan, Jonathen Heagney, Jimmy Quinlivan and our former chairman Father James Donnelly who died recently. We also extend our sympathy to any other members who have lost friends or relatives throughout the year'. On concluding his address Mick thanked the 2008 Club President Owen Donaghy for his continued support of An Charraig Mhor GFC and welcomed the appointment of club stalwart Peter Mc Callan as the President for 2009.
