Monaghan were comfortable in seeing off Down by 0-23 to 2-7 this evening to usher themselves into the semi-finals of the Ulster senior football championship.

In soaking wet conditions in Clones, the Farney men raced out of the traps to lead 0-3 to nothing early and by the time Jack McCarron sent over their 10th point in the 27th minute they were eight to the good.

Caolan Mooney grabbed a sorely needed goal for Down before the break, as they went in trailing 0-12 to 1-4, and the visitors would net again in the opening minute of the restart through Pat Havern.

However, bar those two goals, the Mourne’s attack lacked a real cutting edge and points at the other end from ‘Man of the Match’ McCarron (2), Conor McCarthy and Gary Mohan (free) steadied Monaghan’s ship.

Conor McManus (free) and Shane Carey raised the Farney tally to 0-20 ahead of McManus, McCarron and Conor Boyle completing the winning tally which sees Seamus McEnaney’s men now awaiting either Tyrone or Derry in the Ulster semi-final, while Down are now bound for the Tailteann Cup.
