The Westmeath GAA community has been left reeling following the second death of a young player in a car accident this week.

23-year-old Ryan Briody died on Friday night after he became trapped under a vehicle outside Kinnegad, Co. Westmeath. A recently qualified mechanic, Ryan was part of the Castlepollard CC senior hurling side that claimed the North Leinster PPS C title in 2015.

Described as "the character of the team" by All-Ireland final referee and vice-principal of Castlepollard CC James McGrath, Ryan lined out at wing forward as the north Westmeath school defeated St Peters Dunboyne in the provincial final at the St Loman’s GAA grounds.

On Wednesday, 13-year-old St Pauls GFC-Brownstown player Joseph Anderson was killed when the car he was a passenger in hit a tree in nearby Delvin.
