Keating defends Cummins axing
June 18, 2007
Amid rumours that Brendan Cummins was dropped because of a disagreement over puck-outs at the Gaelic Grounds the previous Sunday, Tipp manager Michael 'Babs' Keating played down the decision to leave out his All-Star goalkeeper for last Saturday's Munster SHC semi-final replay at Thurles.
In all, Keating made six changes from the original fixture, but the most surprising was the inclusion of last year's under 21 goalkeeper Gerry Kennedy at Cummins' expense.
"We're lucky to have two very good goalkeepers in the county at the moment, very good," Keating said.
"It's no disrespect to Brendan Cummins having given 12 hard years of outstanding service to Tipperary but we just felt that Gerry was in there battling for a place and we gave him a chance today in those conditions and I think Tipperary will have a goalkeeper to take over from Brendan for many years to come."
The Tipp boss added: "We picked a team based on the way the guys were training. Now we had a few injuries during the game and we were at sixes and sevens in relation to making the changes, it wasn't easy."
