GARDA COLLEGE LOSE FITZGIBBON CUP MATCH The Garda College were knocked out of the 2005 Fitzgibbon Cup in dramatic circumstances when Galway and Mayo Institute of Technology scored two goals in as many minutes of injury-time to win by 3-11 to 1-13. The Garda College played the entire second half with 14 men and looked like holding out for victory but alas, it was not to be. Clare's Tony Carmody scored 10 points for the Garda College, 8 from placed balls. Emmet Dunphy (Roscrea), David Boland (Silvermines), William Hickey (Boherlahan-Dualla), Alan Kelly (Ballinahinch) and Hugh Coughlan (Moyne-Templetuohy) all started for the Garda College. UCC HURLERS WIN FINAL UCC won the Higher Educational Division One SHL final last Thursday with a 0-12 to 1-8 victory over Cork IT. Cork IT led by 1-6 to 0-7 but an inspired display at wing-forward by Cork's Tom Kenny helped UCC to a narrow one-point victory. Reports from the game suggest that the performance of the UCC halfback line of Kevin Hartnett (Cork), Richie Flannery (Nenagh Eire Óg) and Evan Hanley (Lattin-Cullen) was crucial in their victory. Richie and Evan are currently on the Tipp Senior hurling panel and well done to both on winning this final. Former Tipperary Minor hurler Joe Dixon from Moycarkey-Borris was introduced as a substitute for Cork IT. In all, 5 players who started the 2004 All-Ireland Senior Hurling final played in this game, namely John Gardiner, Brian Murphy and Tom Kenny (all Cork) and Tommy Walsh and Cha Fitzpatrick (Kilkenny). In the Fitzgibbon Cup quarterfinals, UCC will play NUI Galway while Cork IT play Limerick IT. FITZGIBBON CUP - UL VS. DIT The University of Limerick are through to the next round of the Fitzgibbon Cup after a 0-17 to 0-11 victory over DIT. Seven unanswered points either side of half time for UL were crucial in determining the outcome of this match. John Devane (Clonoulty-Rossmore) started at fullback for UL while Richie Ruth (Thurles Sarsfields) came on as a substitute. Kieran Bergin (Killenaule) scored 5 points from centre forward for DIT who also had James Moran (Ballylooby-Castlegrace) at centre-back. UL will now play GMIT (conquerors of the Garda College) in the quarterfinal.
