TIPPERARY HURLING CLUB IN NY In the New York Senior Hurling Final played on Sunday August 24th, Offaly retained their title thanks to a 1-18 to 0-14 victory over Tipperary. The Premier County had Ger Mahon (Galway) and Ollie Moran (Limerick) in town as their "weekend players. However, it was Offaly who dominated the opening quarter with a goal from Eunan McKillop helping the Faithful County to a 1-6 to 0-2 lead after 15 minutes. Tipperary got back in to the game with points from Kieran Bergin (3), Liam Costello and substitute Mike Stretch and by the interval, Offaly's lead was reduced to four points, 1-8 to 0-7. Tipperary's Mike Stretch and Dave Loughnane scored the first two points of the second half and soon afterwards, Kieran Bergin had an excellent goal chance to put Tipperary in front but his effort was well saved by Offaly goalie Alan Gleason. The resultant clearance resulted in an Offaly point from play by Stephen Brown and instead of being in front, Tipperary now trailed by three. This was as close as Tipperary came to victory as Offaly dominated the final quarter to run out deserving seven point winners. The Tipperary team and scorers were as follows - Tomas O'Meara, Shane Walsh, Ger Mahon, John Purcell (0-1), John Madden, Martin Dunne, Dave Loughnane (0-1), Sean Sheperd, Andrew O'Connell, Ollie Moran, Eoin Power (0-3), Liam Costello (0-2), Kieran Bergin (0-3). Subs: Mike Stretch (0-4), Mike Maher, Mike Fitzgerald, Tony Hogan, Gary O'Donoghue.
