June 03, 2008
Bord na nÓg U-10 - Training Continues on Monday and Wednesday evenings in Kent Park at 5.30pm. The Team played Drumcliff away on Monday 26th May coming away with two good wins. On Wednesday 28th May, the Team played host to Calry/St. Joseph's winning one match and losing narrowly in the other. U-12 Blitz - Paddy Clifford Memorial Cup Last Saturday the Club hosted a very successful blitz competition with Clubs from all over the North West taking part including, St. Eunan's Letterkenny, Melvin Gaels, Castlebar Mitchels, Enniskillen Gaels, Swinford, Calry/St. Joseph's and St. Mary's. At the end of a titanic sequence of matches it was the home side, St. Mary's that qualified to face neighbours Calry/St. Joseph's in the final, and it was Calry that snatched victory with a hard fought win. Well done to all participating Clubs and to all the Club Members that gave up their time on Saturday to ensure that the event ran smoothly. Many thanks to all the sponsors especially the Clifford Family who were in attendance to present the inaugural Paddy Clifford Cup. All Photos and results can be found on the website in the coming days. U-14 - Our U-14 boys team won the County Division 1 League Title by beating St. John's in the final played at Calry/St. Joseph's last Tuesday night. This team had gone through the league programme unbeaten and their victory in the final was reward for the efforts put in by the squad in training during the past four months. The team is also to be complimented on their discipline during matches and the respect shown by them to their management, match officials and various opponents. This group of players are a credit to their parents, the management team and the club. Training for the championship continues with our first game scheduled for June 10th at home against Calry/St. Joseph's at 7pm. The St. Mary's squad which own the league was Aaron McGoldrick, Ben McGarry, Brian Smith (capt), Casimir Fox, Cathal Moran, Cian Breheny, Cian Mulligan, Cillian Kelly, Conor Mahon, Dylan Corcoran, Dylan Kilgallon, Enda Gavin, Jake Dykes, James O'Hehir, Kevin Coen, Oisin Foley, Rory Molloy, Seamus Cawley, Stephen Keenan, Hugh O'Neill, Colm Egan, Luke Nicholson, Gerard O'Kelly Lynch, Ryan McManus, David Conlon. U-15 - Well Done to Caomhan O'Loinn and Niall McManus who represented the county U-15 Development Squad in London. Both acquitted themselves very well in blitz matches against London, Hertfordshire and Lancashire last weekend and took in the London v Sligo match. Club member Donal Lyons played a central role in organising a successful trip and the idea germinated from the Feile Peil na nÓg hosted in Leitrim and Sligo last year. We wish Niall McManus a speedy recovery from injury. U-16 - Training will continue on Fridays during the duration of the exams in preparation for the Championship which begins in late June. U-18 - Training continues on Mondays & Fridays at 6.30pm during the exams in order to prepare for the championship which will take place in July and August as well as the remainder of the League. Good luck to County Minor Panel members Mark and Eanna in the Connacht semi-final against Mayo at the end of June. Saturday Morning Coaching The Saturday Morning Coaching continues this weekend from 10.30am to 12.00pm. The John Kent Sport sponsored coaching continues to attract good numbers. The recent multinational day has helped us attract an international flavour. The coaching is also enhanced by the recent appearance of Transition Year students from Summerhill College who have undergone Foundation Coaching and Refereeing skills training and we are glad to see our U-16 players Padraig O'Bradaigh, Brian O'Donaill and Caolan O'hEithir help out. Summerhill College Congratulations to Caomhán Lyons, Seamus Cawley, Brian Smith, Conor Mahon & Eddie Cunningham who were members of the Summerhill 2nd Year Squad that won the Connaught Colleges 'B' Championship and League double recently. Meeting The next Bord na nOg meeting will be held on Monday 9th June at the Club House. Senior/Intermediate Our Senior side lost out to Curry by the narrowest of margins in an enthralling first round of the Senior Championship in Ballymote on Saturday evening last. Curry opening the scoring with a free in the opening minutes before Mark Breheny replied with a free for Mary's. With Mary's defending stoutly and Mark Butler and Seamus Burns gaining the upper hand around the middle sector, Mary's were wining the possession stakes. A good point from play by Donnacha Gallagher was followed by a further Breheny score from a placed ball to give Mary's a two point lead. However, Curry levelled the game once more with a brace of frees from Stephen Kilcoyne before an inspirational long range score from the boot of Johnny Martyn put Mary's into a one point lead once more. Curry responded with another point from a free just before the half time whistle following an infringement in the Mary's defence to leave the half time score at St. Mary's 0-5 Curry 0-5. Mary's began the second half in the same fashion as the first with Gallagher putting over a good score from play from the left hand side. In an exciting game that was nip and tuck all the way through, Curry levelled once more before a brilliant run by Johnny Davey resulted in another Gallagher score from play. Going into the final five minutes, Curry nudged infront with a fisted score as the game became scrappier around the middle. A brilliant point from substitute Johnny Lynch from way out on the left tied the match once more going into injury time before Curry scored a long range effort to put them into a one point lead with time up. Final score St. Mary's 0-10 Curry 0-11. Best performers for Mary's were Johnny Davey and Johnny Martyn in defence, Seamus Burns at midfield and Donnacha Gallagher in the forwards. The Seniors face Calry/St. Joseph's on Saturday evening in Tubbercurry (Throw-in 6.00pm) in the second round of the Sligo Senior Championship and we would ask all supporters to get out to Tubbercurry to cheer on the lads.
