Drumcliffe/Rosses Point club notes

October 05, 2020

The club was awaiting, at the time of writing, an update on possible changes to the Government Covid restrictions. We will update our members on what any new restrictions mean for our club activity as soon as they are finalised.

Our girls minor footballers were narrowly beaten by Tourlestrane in Sunday's county minor 'A' championship final, played at a wet and windy Cuilbeg in Carraroe. The final scoreline was 1-10 to 1-8. Conditions were dreadful for both teams. DRP, playing with strong wind in the opening half, established a 1-5 to 0-2 lead but a goal for Tourlestrane shortly before the interval kept the south Sligo girls in touch. In the second period, Tourlestrane gradually edged in front as scores into the wind were at a premium. Our girls battled valiantly - but the appalling weather conditions were never going to allow either team display their full range of football skills. Despite the loss, this talented group of footballers can be proud of where they stand in Sligo LGFA football. They are right there at the top table - with plenty more good days ahead.

The boys under-14 footballers 'A' championship final against Eastern Harps was called off on Sunday because of the weather.

The boys under-14 footballers 'A' championship final against Eastern Harps was postponed on Sunday because of the bad weather.

Benbulben Gaels minor hurlers were very unlucky to lose out to Tourlestrane in Friday night’s county shield final at Scarden. Tourlestrane won by a point - 2-7 to 2-6 - in a contest which could have swung either way. It’s worth noting that all bar three of the Gaels team will be minor again next year. As a further illustration of hurling’s growth in the club, each one of our underage teams (U12, U14, U16 & U18) has contested finals in 2020.

There was disappointment for our senior men's footballers on Saturday evening at Corran Park in Ballymote when they were beaten by Curry by 1-17 to 0-11 in the Benson Cup final. For the record, the club has, to date, has contested/is contesting 11 finals/shield finals in 2020. Not all them have ended in victory - but it is an encouraging sign of our various teams competitiveness across the grades and competitions.

Our boys under-12 football teams are scheduled to contest their respective county semi-finals against Eastern Harps and St Mary's next Sunday. They played enjoyablechallenge games against St Molaise Gaels last week.

Our thanks to Louise Clarke (formerly of this parish) and Calry/St Joseph's under-8 and under-10 girls footballers who played our nursery girls footballers in a very enjoyable fun match last Saturday morning in Oxfield. The goodie bags afterwards were particularly appreciated by the players!

We wish to extend sympathies to the O’Beirne family, following the death this weekend of Brian O’Beirne, Doonowney, Carney. Brian was a former Sligo county minor in 1967 and won a junior county title with Grange in 1969. His daughter Valerie was a member of the DRP side that reached the 2009 All-Ireland club football final. Brian was a regular fixture st DRP club games back then.

Deepest condolences also to Denise O'Callaghan and the Filan family following the death of her dad Peader on Sunday. He had a deep life-long affection for the GAA - and we are all thinking of Denise and Peader's grand-children Rían, Gemma and Ross at this sad time.
