Peter Canavan is tipping Roscommon to retain their Allianz Football League Division 1 status, possibly at the expense of their Connacht rivals Galway and Mayo.

Davy Burke’s men boosted their survival hopes with a 1-16 to 0-7 drubbing of Monaghan at Dr Hyde Park last Sunday.

"I don't think he [Davy Burke] would have expected it to be as easy. Normally, Monaghan, when you play them in the National League, you have to earn it,” Canavan said on RTÉ 2fm’s Game On.

"This time around, it was so comfortable. Roscommon are starting to get their key players back, they're starting to find a bit of form.

"They've got a real chance now. They're sitting on three points. They play Mayo this weekend and Monaghan have Galway. Next week, we could be seeing Mayo and Galway at the bottom of Division 1. Not too many would have expected that.

"Roscommon have the quality, I wouldn't be surprised if they go from strength to strength now and stay up in Division 1."
