U8:- Thank you to St Dominic's for hosting a very well organised U-8s Camogie blitz on Thursday Evening. Despite the few drops of rain everything went to plan, thanks to every game been overseen by very astute referees, all credit to St Dominic's. The Roscommon Gaels contingent had a great turn out fielding three teams playing three games each. All players were very well behaved and gave each of the opposing teams a good challenge with great successes. They were great ambassadors for Roscommon Gaels camogie and they should be very proud of themselves. Well done to all involved and all the family's that came to support the girls and the U8 mentors. There is another blitz in Tulsk on Tuesday Evening @ 6.30pm for the girls.

 

U10: Well done to the U10 Camogie girls that played in their first blitz of the year on Friday last. The girls showed great determination and skill throughout their 3 games against Oran, Four Roads and St Dominic's. Thanks to Oran camogie club for hosting the blitz. Next up for the U10's girls is a GNB match against Kiltulla Killiomordaly on Sunday.

U12- U12 Camogie continues every Friday Evening from 6.30-7.30pm. Some of the girls will be playing on the second team entered for feile.

 

U14: Training continues for our U14 Camogie Girls who are getting ready for Feile.

HURLING

U-14: Hurling training is on Monday at 6.30. We play Oran this week in the county league in Rockfield on the 30th of May at 7pm.

 

U10: Our under 10 hurlers traveled to Athlone Monday evening to play a challenge against Southern Gaels. We fielded 2 teams of Under 10's with both teams playing 2 games each. Both our teams competed very strongly and enjoyed the match against Southern Gaels. Our hurlers really enjoy matches with coaches and hurlers learning alot from these games. Thanks to parents who support all these games by traveling and encouraging all hurlers taking part. We will be arranging a return leg with Southern Gaels in Lisnamult in the weeks ahead.

 

The second U10 hurling blitz of the year takes place in Oran this Saturday June 2nd. Coaches will be in touch with parents during the week to confirm numbers.

Poc Fada

The Provincial Poc Fada is fixed for Connacht Centre Bekan on Monday July 2nd. 

All county competitions should be run in advance and winners / Runner-up only at adult, winner only at U16 should be forwarded to Adrian Hassett (Connacht operations) or Damien Coleman by Friday June 22nd.

Do you know what fun is? Winning! What does it take to win? Hard work and dedication. Kids play fortnight because they can obtain a "victory" with minimal effort. Want sports to be fun, practice hard, put in your work at the craft and the fun will follow.

 

Congratulations to Rodhan Dowd who came 2nd and DJ Hession whom came 4th at the County Féile skills competition at Athleague's grounds Sunday Last.

U8 & U10's: Training continues every Wednesday evening 6.30-7.30pm. The girls and their coaches are having lots of fun and are making great progress. We had an U10 challenge on Wednesday against St Brigids. The girls had an enjoyable game. Encourage them to get out with their footballs and practise in the bright evenings if possible.

U12:- Well done to our u12's who recorded their 4th win in the championship on Monday evening last when they overcame Padraig Pearses on a score line of 0-21 to Padraig Pearses 0-0. The team sit at the top of the table with two games remaining Ballinameen and Boyle Respectively. We will play Ballinameen in Lisnamult on Monday evening 28th at 7pm.

U14: Well done to our U14's who defeated St Croans in the league on Tuesday Evening last on a score line of Roscommon Gaels 4-10 to St Croans 3-3.

U16: Training Continues Wednesday evenings in The Hyde for our U16's.

Junior Ladies: Training will continue for our Junior Team Tuesday Evenings at 8pm.

 

Roscommon Gaels Nursery:

Roscommon gaels nursery training contiues Thursday 31st of May at 7pm to 745pm on the Hyde training pitch weather permitting. 

 

We  will be introducing the lads to minimum contact games over the next few weeks so we will be requiring gumshields to be worn.

U9 Football: Our U9 footballers had their first blitz of the year in Oran on Saturday. Our lads were absolutely brilliant and played well in all games. Training continues on Tuesday evenings at 6.45pm-8pm.

U14 Football: Well done to our U14 Division 1 Football lads who defeated Boyle last Thursday Evening in the League Semi Final final score Roscommon Gaels 4-12 Boyle 4-07. The lads will now play Clann Na Gael in the League final date tbc.

 

U16 Football: U16 footballers were out today in the Division 2 League Final in Enfield against Elphin/Ballinameen unfortunately our lads were beaten by a stronger team final score Roscommon Gaels 1-7 Elphin/Ballinameen 1-14.

 

Junior: Well done to our Junior Team who defeated Fuerty Friday Evening last on home soil on a score line of Roscommon Gaels 4-13 Fuerty 2-12.

 

Well done to John McManus & James Featherstone and the Roscommon Senior Football Team on their defeat to Leitrim on Saturday.  Well done to Mark Nally who was on the Panel for Longford today who defeated Meath.

JUGGLING BOTH

Roscommon Gaels U14 ladies have won County Titles in both Football and Camogie. U14's Hurlers have won County Title and are through to a Division one League Final. It has been an unbelievable year in all U14 codes. And it's all down to the dedication and hard work and the older hands in the club putting in the correct structures and it's paying dividends now. We have an excellent chair lady and an excellent committee. We have very sensible Camogie/Hurling and Football management teams and they understand that the club wants to compete on both fronts so we are sensible about how we approach both football and Hurling/Camogie. When Championship season comes around the freshness of the teams takes precedence. In the GAA common sense often goes out the window, but with the Roscommon Gaels U14's Lads/Ladies we have gotten a lot of good out of the common sense approach. E.g. Roscommon Gaels U14 Ladies don't field teams in ladies football, preferring to concentrate on Camogie - and it's a move that clearly paid off.

 

Club Chairperson Teresa Hession has been central to the success enjoyed by Roscommon Gaels over the past years. Along with other members of the committee, she does her best to oversee both and ensure that the problems that dog other dual clubs don't arise. Most of our U14 Lads and Ladies are on both Football and Hurling/Camogie panels, with most of them starters in every game. Obviously there has been allot of co-operation and Communication between both and this is what makes these teams successful. Communication is the only way to take dual clubs forward. There are the occasional hiccups, but mostly it's very good. The real secret to the clubs success is the buy in from the entire population of the area, which has allowed the club to build on the solid foundations laid down by its founders. We are currently working on how to establish a stronger school link. It's great to see all our pitches in the summer being used in all codes. Those pitches are occupied with Hurling, Camogie and Football and its down to the men and women who got it going years ago. If anybody had said 40 years ago what we'd be doing now we'd have said they were mad. It's just impossible! But it just shows you what hard work and co operation between all sections, football, hurling and camogie, can achieve. Sadly it has to be said that dual clubs won't work unless there is success because people will find a reason for it not to work. But when you get a bit of success people say hang on it can work. The more people that embrace our dual club and embrace dual players and it's not just about football coming from a county like Roscommon. I think it's important that if you are part of a GAA club you have an obligation to promote all codes because at the end of the day we are all Gaels.

 

 

 

The 18 classic problems every single GAA club faces

Ever read Christy O'Connor's book, The Club? Just a typical year in the life of a club player. Drama, fallouts, committee meeting after meeting. It's scary how it resonates with you, reading the events of a hurling team in Clare.

You see the same characters you know from your own club popping up in Christy's. The same problems. The same life.

We're all cut from the same cloth and no GAA club is really any different. None of them are exempt from any of these classic problems you'll all recognise.

1. Keep out of the bloody goalmouths

Nets aren't for shooting into. The six-yard box isn't for 'keepers to trample all over. You're digging up the grass, for f**k's sake and it's your fault now that cages and cones are going to be brought in and tied to the posts to keep you out of that area.

 

2. Underage managers not letting their players play in the grade above

He's MY under-14.

 

 

 

3. Underage manager managing his own son

Every two years, he moves up - because he 'thinks it's best for the team to have that consistency'. Every two years, his son is given a prime position.

4. The parent

I was taking our under-16s for a few years and, after a championship semi-final win as the players walked from the changing rooms onto the bus - with the final coming up in 8 days time, the club's first final in nine years - a disgruntled parent whose son didn't play came up to me and said, "you need to get some of those lads game time."

This was in September - nine months into friendlies and pre-season competitions, blitzes and leagues. This was in September, with one game left.

 

5. Men v Ladies

They got polo shirts and we didn't.
We need the pitch on Sunday.
Why do they get the gym all the time?

These issues will probably come to a head at the dinner dance if one team is successful and the other isn't. Or just in general passive aggressive Face book posts.

 

 

6. The drink

The drink finds the best of them.

For every good player, he has a better older brother who never made the most of his talent.

 

 

7. The grounds man in general just

It's his pitch. He'll ban all teams from playing on it when he wants. He'll cover it with sand when he wants. He'll erect blockages around the goalmouths, close the sports hall, and run up a bill without you even realising what just happened.

And he'll still have the most complaints in the monthly meeting.

 

 

 

8. Exams

Brats disappearing to study for three months because they can't part with one hour a week.

 

9. Manager's expenses

"We're paying for this shite?"

 

 

10. Sacking a manager

Everyone knows he should be ousted but nobody wants to do it. And definitely nobody wants to go looking for a new manager.

 

 

11. Who do I talk to to get this suspension overturned?

Was it videotaped? No? Good.

 

 

12. The referee

Who's the best person to send in to talk to the ref and ask him to change that red to two yellows?

 

13. Club membership

I'll bring it in on Tuesday.

 

 

14. Fixtures

F**king county. Your season was set in stone; it wasn't going to change this time round. It has.

Postponements, cancellations, refixes have made it clear that you should only take your holidays in December. Maybe.

Then paranoia sets in so much that you don't trust anyone - not even when a team postpones due to a death in the club. "Ack, Jesus, that's a tenuous link. Probably the grounds man's uncle's friend's cousin."

15. Where are the f**king under-16 balls?

Those things aren't cheap.

The only objective for the next game is to nick one or two of the opposition's balls. Bring along a minor solely for that purpose and get him onto the team bus as soon as his job is done.

A chance for everyone to air their grievances and bring all these topics under the microscope. That's the fun part though. Then you have to go looking for underage managers to take teams, pressure senior players into under-8 jobs, you need to find a new secretary, treasurer and chairman.

The only years you actually have willing volunteers; it causes a split in the club.

FÉILE na nGAEL Finals 2018
(Camogie and Hurling)

 

In 2018 Connacht GAA will host the Féile na nGael U14 camogie and hurling finals.  Close on 60 hurling clubs from the province and 12 more from Westmeath and Longford will be involved. There will also be close on 50 camogie clubs from the province hosting camogie clubs from all over Ireland. The dates for Féile na nGael 2018 are Friday 8th to Sunday 10th June.

Roscommon Gaels will be represented in these National Féile Finals by our very own newly crowned U14 County Roscommon Hurling Champions.   

We will also be represented by two camogie teams; one in Division 5 and one in Division 7 which together make up our U13 and U14 camogie development squads.  Our U14 girls are also newly crowned U14 County Roscommon 'B' Camogie Champions.  

We are very fortunate to be able to enter two camogie teams.  It brings the opportunity to more young girls in our Club to experience playing in the Féile Finals which is a really positive event for young girls and boys involved in our national games.  

In turn, this means that we will be hosting three visiting Clubs and this is a wonderful opportunity for our club and community to give a fantastic Céad Míle Fáilte to our guests.

Roscommon Gaels will be hosting:

• St Mullins Camogie Club, Co Carlow
• Fermanagh Camogie, Co Fermanagh
• Ennistymon Hurling Club, Co Clare

Fun and Games 
The first throw-in for Roscommon Gaels will be on Friday evening when our U14 Division 5 camogie team will take on Causeway of Co Kerry at 5pm in Dr Hyde Park, followed by a second game against our neighbours Oran at the same venue at 6.30pm.  These Gaels girls will play again on Saturday morning at 11am in our home ground at Lisnamult against our guests from Co Carlow, St Mullins Camogie Club.  At this stage, their Féile quarter final placing will be decided.  If they are placed 3rd or 4th in their group they will play in the Shield Quarter Finals and a 1st or 2nd placing will take them into the Cup Quarter Finals, all of which will be played in St Dominic's pitch from 2pm on Saturday.  The girls will be fighting for a place in the Féile Semi-Finals at this stage.

CAMOGIE DIVISION 5:  ROSCOMMON GAELS HOME VENUE

Our U14 Champion Hurlers will begin their Féile campaign on Friday evening in Athleague pitch with a game at 5.45pm against Monaghan Hurling and a second game at 6.30pm against Athleague/Tremane.  These steady group of lads will then take on our guests from Ennistymon, Co Clare in Dr Hyde Park on Saturday morning at 10.15am.  The hurling quarter finals will be held in the Connaught Centre of Excellence in Bekan, Co Mayo.  The Shield Quarter Finals will begin at 3.30pm while the Cup Quarter Finals will begin at 4.15pm and a place in the relevant Semi-Finals will be up for grabs.

Our Division 7 team of Gaels camogie players will travel to Tulsk for their Friday night games, the first of which will be at 5.45pm against St Ailbes of Co Limerick; the second one against Tulsk.  These girls will get their turn to play camogie in Dr Hyde Park on Saturday morning at 9.30am when they get the chance to show their skill to our guests from Fermanagh Camogie.  These girls will all be looking for the best Quarter Final placing.  If they are placed in the Shield Quarter Finals, they will play in Lisnamult at 2.30pm and if they are placed in the Cup Quarter Finals, they will play at the same start time in Castlerea.

Après Matches
The Roscommon Gaels GAA Club Céad Míle Fáilte gets under way on Friday evening in Dr Hyde Centre when our three Gaels Féile teams and our three visiting Féile teams will get a well-earned bit of grub and then meet their host players and families.  Our chairperson will say a few words of welcome before everyone gets home for an early night in preparation for Saturday's fun and games. 

After the games on Saturday morning between each of our Roscommon Gaels teams and our visitors, everyone will re-convene again at Dr Hyde Centre for a quick lunch before heading off to their relevant Quarter Finals.  When the day's matches are finished all players will be gotten back to their host families for a shower and some dinner before heading out once again for the great big Féile Disco. 

The Féile Disco takes place in Dr Hyde Centre from 8.30pm to 11.30pm.  Music and refreshments will be put on for all our young players and our young visitors while the mentors and parents will be invited to a bit of craic in the Lounge.  The night will include an address by our Chairperson and some presentations to our visiting Clubs.
