GREENFIELD FOODS MONAGHAN SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP.
There were 4 games played over the weekend in the Monaghan senior football championship the results of which saw reigning champions Scotstown and Magheracloone book their place in the semifinals while Monaghan Harps and Clontibret crash out of the series. The losers in the other 2 games, Ballybay and Latton now revert to the last qualifier round to keep their prospects alive.
Scotstown 1-18, Latton 1-17.
Reigning champions Scotstown booked their place in the semi-final with the narrowest of victories over Latton in an absolute thriller in Clontibret on Saturday evening last, 2 points in stoppage time by Ross McKenna and Shane Carey from a free sealing victory for the blues. Scotstown led at half-time by 1-9 to 0-10, the goal by Ross McKenna in the 23rd minute giving them an edge after the sides had been level on 6 occasions. A goal from a penalty by Hugh McElroy in the 9th minute of the second-half put Latton in front as the game built in intensity and it was Scotstown who were playing catch up during the 3rd quarter. Going into stoppage time Latton led by the minimum margin until Scotstown struck late to seal victory.

Truagh 2-11, Clontibret 1-13.
A sharper, hungrier Truagh got their championship aspirations back on track with this narrow, yet deserved victory over Clontibret in this keenly contested qualifier game that built to an electric finish in Emyvale. Truagh were only headed once in the entire contest and that approaching the half way mark in the second-half but they finished strongly with a 2nd goal from Ryan Mohan putting them back in front and they held out for victory in an exciting finish. Truagh started well and had 1-3 on the board before Clontibret opened their account in the 11th minute but by half-time the sides were level, Clontibret hitting 2 late points to send the sides in deadlocked at the break. It was a seesaw affair throughout the second-half with a goal by MP O'Dowd putting Clontibret in front for the only time in the game approaching the end of the 3rd quarter but Truagh got back on level terms and then hit the front again through Aaron Treanor to help seal a memorable victory.

Magheracloone 0-15, Ballybay 0-14.
Magheracloone spearheaded by the accuracy of Tomas Freeman with 10 points, 6 from frees, booked their place in the semi-final at the expense of Ballybay in a game that ended on a controversial note when Ballybay thought they had snatched victory with an injury time goal only to learn that the final whistle had sounded just prior to the ball going into net. It was an unfortunate end to what had been an absorbing contest during which the sides had been level on 5 occasions including at half-time when they went in at 0-8 apiece. Magheracloone opened a 4 points lead by the end of the 3rd quarter but were pegged back to level terms by Ballybay 3 minutes into stoppage time but there was further drama. Magheracloone regained the lead in the 5th minute from a Tomas Freeman free and with extra time looming Ballybay were awarded a free a minute later but the effort dropped short and while the ball ended in the Magheracloone net the referee had deemed that it was after he had blown the full time whistle.

Castleblayney 1-10, Monaghan Harps 0-10.
Castleblayney are through to the quarter-finals of the senior football championship while Monaghan Harps exit the series after the Faughs proved that little bit more economical in this low-key and at times scrappy affair in Inniskeen on Saturday evening last. Castleblayney led at half-time by 1-5 to 0-6, the goal by Patrick Tavey proving the crucial score. That goal still separated the sides throughout the second-half with Monaghan's closing the gap to 2 in the 18th minute but failing to register again while Castleblayney sealed victory with a point by Dermot Malone a minute into stoppage time.
