Toome club notes

June 22, 2021

Reserves: The reserves got their campaign off to a blistering start this past week with an opening fixture against Castleblayney on Wednesday 16th June for an 8:00pm throw in followed by Scotstown on Sunday 20th June at 3:00pm. First up the lads played , Blayney in what was an uphill challenge as they found it difficult to get any decision on the night in their favour. However, despite this the lads played the better football and picked off their scores, playing well in defence at crucial stages of the game. What has to be applauded is the performance of the teams' young guns who played with passion, courage and conviction and John Gorman who had a great game between the sticks. Ryan Murphy opened the scoring and was quickly followed up by Andrew Connolly, Tincer and Kieran McCooey before Blayney could reply. Toome took the lead at the water break to 0:04 - 0:02. Liam Murphy came off with an injury to be replaced by a convincing Daniel Friskey. It was nip and tuck to half time with both teams scoring 3 points apiece, HT 0:07 - 0:05. The second half started at a slightly more tactical pace, and it was 5 minutes before the first of two scores by Toome, first Tincer then Andrew. Second half water break 0:09 - 0:06, Friskey scored after the water break and then great piece of play by Ryan put Kevin McCooey on for a lovely score, with 10 left it was 0:11 - 0:07, then what can only be described as harsh, a second yellow for Hugo Connelly and he was off. this allowed the Blayney men in with 3 scores to no reply, leaving just the 1 score between them. However, Toome re-grouped and got stuck in for the remaining minutes. A great ball was then played through to Ryan who had got himself into open space and he scored a well taken goal, this was followed up by another point and Toome were the Victors at St Victors Park on the night, 1:12 - 0:10.

With spirits high and the great weather, it was for Scotstown the lads did head on Sunday. This was expected to be a gruelling match with the blazing sun, tired legs after the Wednesday night game and a few minor injuries across the board. Numbers were limited and we only had 3 available substitutes for this match, with John unavailable the management made a tactical decision to put Daniel Friskey in the nets and this certainly was a good one. Scotstown opened the scoring on the 5-minute mark followed up by a free to take a 2-point lead, Toome looked as if they were not going to find their feet, then Ryan stepped up with a tasty point from play and the reliable Liam McCooey scored a well taken free to draw the game level. Toome were firmly in control at this stage and took the game to them with the young guns placing the scores with Kevin, Hugo, Liam and then Andy to take the game to the water break with a score of 0:06 - 0:02. Toome were in good form and followed the break with a point (Kevin) and a well taken goal by Hugo who was on fire, Kevin followed this up with a further 2 points, half time score 1:09 - 0:02. Scotstown had squandered several chances in that half and must have been wondering how they hit so many wides. The second half resumed and Toome had a scrappy start to the second period with a few wayward passes. This let Scotstown in and they scored a well taken goal from play, Killian Ruddy responded with a fine point to leave 8 between the sides, Scotstown pulled another goal back as Toome had become a little unsettled, Hugo responded with another point then it was a point by Scotstown and the another reply from Hugo. Unfortunately, Hugo suffered a devastating blow and came down badly from a high ball and was unable to continue. Scotstown pulled back another point, but it was Ryan who had the last say with the final point of the game, Toome were the well-deserved winners at 1:13 - 2:04. It was heard by one of the wise men on the side-line, "It's not a bad week when you get a win against Blayney and Scotstown". We wish Hugo a speedy recovery and a very well done to all the team and management for the great start to this campaign. Next match for the reserves is scheduled for an away fixture on Sunday 4th Jul 2021 to Truagh.

Thank you to all the parents for bringing the children and adhering to all COVID restrictions and guidelines in place, along with the completion of the Return to Play Forms.

U15s: The U15s hads a home fixture to Clones on Thursday last, this was once again a one-sided affair unfortunately. Many of the older lads appeared to be missing and it was on the shoulders of the younger members of the team to carry this game through. Despite the score many of these young lads showed determination and strength but the gap was just a little to big for them to get any real grip of this game. Clones were strong and had ability on all areas of the field.  Final score Corduff 2:06 - 6:14 Clones. The lads travel to Inniskeen this Thursday 24th June for Round 3 with throw in at 7:30pm. Training continues in Corduff on Tuesday and Sunday. We ask all parents to ensure they complete the Return to Play questionnaire prior to each session and match.  Next match is a home fixture against Carrick on Thursday 1st July at 7:30pm.
