
David Quirke's two first-half goals set O'Mahonys up for an hard-earned SHC round two win over Dunderry on Thursday night at Athboy

Quirke's goals sustained O'Mahonys against a strong Dunderry rally. However, their neighbours were unable to make up the six-point interval deficit.
Quirke added a point from play and one from a sideline cut in the second-half. The latter arrived in the 56th minute. Seconds earlier Conor Dempsey pointed to leave just two points between the sides, 2-11 to 2-9.
Quirke final scores was the cue for James Burke's men to settle matters. With the hour almost up sub Derek Loughran netted from close range for O'Mahonys after Quirke's attempt to complete his hat-trick was blocked.
A Conor Farrell 65 wound up in the O'Mahonys net to cut the cut from seven to four points deep into added time. Before the end, another sub John Foley completed his side's tally with a fine point.
The scores were tied twice in the opening quarter, but never thereafter. Quirke's opening goal by a similar score from Jamie Leavy that levelled matters for the second and final time in the 11th minute.
Paddy Dillon provided the assist for Quirke's second goal. It restored O'Mahonys' lead, 2-1 to 1-1, which they took to the finish.
Second quarter points from Jake Regan and Jack Walsh were the highlights of the second quarter from O'Mahonys' point of view.
Dunderry revived somewhat in the run-in to half-time, outscoring the town side by 0-3 to 0-2. Keenan's frees were an important source of scores to the team in black-and-white.
Quirke provided the opening for another fine Walsh point. It was 2-7 to 1-4 at the break.
Dunderry passed up some good scoring chances in the third quarter. At the other end a good block by defender Brendan Wright denied O'Mahonys another goal, in the 41st minute.
Jack Walsh pointed from distance for O'Mahonys. Early in the final quarter Dunderry were boosted when Keenan netted with a strong strike from about 20 metres.
When the same player sent over from play in the 48th minute, the gap was down to three, 2-10 to 2-7 and we were set for an exciting finale.
