Meath Panel 2023

Replying To Crinigan:  "In fairness they were too light for the type of football McEntee was playing - ie carrying the ball and trying to punch holes. That kind of football is too attritional for a Joey Wallace or a James Conlon. They'd be much better served by quick diagonal ball into the corners but we were always so deep it seemed for that and didn't either have the forwards far enough forward to receive it or the providers far up enough the field to provide the long pass."
Why could you want to kick balls into corners of the field?

I agree with you about over use of carrying the ball under Mcentee but I don't see Conlon and Wallace as two players that can function at the top level under any style of football .
Two great lads but in my eyes too small to play at the top level and this has been a problem over the last number of years with a number of our forwards
You can kick all the ball into the corners but if you are not big and strong enough to break the tackles its a waste of time .
Look at all the teams that were in the last 8 of the championship if the ball went in fast it went into a man that could physically compete something we haven't been able to do in a long time .

Deliberately stupid comment.

Diagonal balls are played in front of fast players moving into the d. No one said anything about kicking into corners. Suppose you are making the case again for big slow useless in croke park type of players

Pretty sure you told us all that Morris and Walsh could do it.....

Are you back tracking on that and continuing to **** on the players en masse

With two rounds of the championship played and another round this weekend, have we seen any new players who might be putting their hands up for inclusion for the 2023 panel.

I see a few names like Shane Walsh and Aaron Lynch are coming to the fore so far and would be nice to see them get some proper game time next year in a new structure.

With Colm saying they'll run a big panel and a developmental panel of over 20's too, and regional championships after the club championships, there's plenty of opportunities for lads to put themselves in the shop window now.

I was at Donaghmore vs Ratoath, thought Daithi McGowan and Cian Rogers were good for Ratoath and Kevin Curly was good for Donaghmore

That's a new batch of names alright, fair play Bear10

Dunno how the regional thing will work but i think its's giving O'Rourke to see as many players as possible before aseembling a final squad.

Nash wasn't at the races against McGowan and Flynn in the simonstown Ratoath game! Finnerty is defo worth a look!

Went along to the Kells v Ratoath game in Skryne on Friday evening. Even though I'm a Kells man born and bred the Gaeils wouldn't be my club, so enjoyed it as a neutral.

Some players there who will definitely be part of Colm O'Rourke's squad for 2023. On the Ratoath side the 2 McGowans and Jack Flynn looked like inter county players all day long and should be part of any set up. Big strong athletic and mobile lads who can all get around the pitch, give and take a belt and take a score. For me it would be Flynn +1 in midfield for 2023. Flynn still needs a bit of work on his placed balls though. Conor McGill stood out and hopefully a change of manager and fresh legs might help him rediscover his 2018-19 form. Wallace and McMahon were busy, but for me their time at inter county is done. They were prominent for Ratoath, but not dominant and time for other to shine. Cian Rodgers did a few good things and maybe he'll be someone for the extended panel to see if he can develop further.

On the Kells side, Fionn Reilly was by far the best player they had and Jordan Muldoon when brought in showed why he was on the panel for the last two years. Think Kells are missing a standout forward with a bit of class to help them along, maybe that's Seamus Mattimoe, but they didn't seem to have much fire power, where as Ratoath got scores at ease. Dunno if Fionn will be around for 23 but definitely worth a squad place if available.

Hard to judge on basis of dead rubber matches. /I am sure some lads were not up for it. Some lads are cute and save it for when it matters.

Agree with a lot of this. From that game and Ratoath Ashbourne I would be thinking Ratoath's county players would be Flynn, D McGowan, McGill and maybe Cian Rodgers on the extended panel. Joey Wallace hasn't started a game yet so hard to judge yet. For Kells Fionn Reilly didn't have his best day but still is absolutely worth inclusion if he can commit. Quigley the centre back was also fairly good

A few others I've been impressed by during the league and championship that are worth a look. Some have been on recent county underage teams and may not be ready this year but could be options for development panel. The regional championships should be a good way for some of these to show their stuff on a bigger stage.

Aodhán Mallon (O'Mahonys)
Diarmuid Morriarty (Curraha)
Ger Dwane (Trim)
Ciaran Caulfield (Trim)
Colin Hawdon (Oldcastle)
Rian McConnell (Castletown)
Josh Harford (Kilbride)
Ben Donnelly (Kilbride)
Daire Shine (Ballinlough)
Dylan Briody (St Brigids)
Michael Flood (St Brigids)

Was very impressed by Colin Hawdon on Sunday vs St Michaels, fast, strong and was the biggest threat for Michaels all day. Thought Brian O'Reilly on Scully was excellent keeping Scully scoreless I believe and has been very important for St Michaels this championship.

First time seeing Aodhan Mallon play yesterday and Ger Dwane on Saturday, Very impressed with both. Surely on the radar of meath selectors.
